After failing to get the first three games of the season in at Kinston due to a power outage and two rainouts, the Warthogs opened the season with a tough 7-5 loss to Lynchburg. The Warthogs didn’t trail in the game until the top of the 9th when the Hillcats rallied with a pair of walks, a Warthogs error and two RBI singles to score three runs. The Warthogs responded by winning a 10-inning pitching duel, 1-0. Matt Long picked up the win after pitching a scoreless tenth. John Ely started the game and gave up no runs on just one hit in six innings. Paulo Orlando drove in C.J. Lang with a single to left to end the game. The Hogs then took the rubber game of the three game series on the back of a 4 RBI night from Javier Colina. Colina had an RBI double in the fourth inning, then blasted a three-run homerun to left center in the sixth. Aaron Poreda struggled early, giving up runs in each of the first two innings, but then settled down to go five innings and allowing two runs, one earned, off five hits. Last night, it was Colina to the rescue again as he went 3-for-4 with a homerun and a triple. The homerun in the seventh inning broke up a 4-4 tie. Ryan Rote got the win in relief, pitching two shutout innings. Jacob Rasner was impressive in his season debut, going five innings and allowing just one run off of six hits. With the win, the Warthogs jump to first in the Southern Division. Clutch play of the week: With two outs and a runner at second, Paulo Orlando gives the Warthogs their first win of the season with a line drive to left field. The hit broke up what was a 0-0 game in the tenth inning. Carolina League Standings: North South Club W L Pct. GB Club W L Pct. Celebrate your birthday with the Warthogs It’s the stress-free way to make your child’s special day one to remember! It’s Friday, Joey’s mom is frantically calling to make sure her cake order is on time. She looks down her checklist: ice cream, check; punch, made; cookies, in the oven; clown, will need to be picked up at two, oh, and I still need to get directions. She runs out to the party store and picks up a pin-the-tail-on-the-meerkat game because they were all out of donkeys and places an order for a fruit and veggie tray that’s late and will cost an extra $2.50. She gets home just in time to burn the cookies, spill the punch and speak obscenities at that goofy looking meerkat. Sally’s mom on the other hand is relaxing Friday, having already booked Sally’s birthday party with Wally the Warthog at Ernie Shore Field. Planning your child’s birthday is easy when it’s done with the Warthogs. We take care of the food, drink, cake, even a clown, face painter or moonwalk upon request and availability. We also provide a souvenir to every child at the party and a team-autographed baseball for the birthday boy or girl. Every child also gets a game voucher for their choice of the carousel, speed pitch or putt-putt games at the field. Each party also includes a visit from Wally! All of this plus a reserved ticket to the game is just $14 per person (10 person minimum). Reservations must be made at least one week in advance. Why stress out when we can handle everything? Call the Warthogs office at (336) 759-2233 to reserve your birthday party today! |

Part II
Down and Dirty with a Warthog 22-year-old Poreda ready to make a big splash in first full season with White Sox Aaron Poreda can’t remember ever winning any kind of championship. Not in baseball, not in anything. But he’s been close. Poreda, the first round draft pick of the Chicago White Sox in 2007 (25th overall), can still tell you about how he was disqualified from the 25-meter breaststroke when he was eight because he fell off the starting platform too early. He can still tell you about making it to the championship football game while at Campolindo High School, only to fall short. He’ll even share about leading the University of San Francisco to the regionals in Lincoln, Neb., where he remembers defeating the University of Nebraska 5-1 in front of a packed pro-Cornhusker audience. They later lost to Manhattan to end yet another title bid. The details of the stories are vivid. But for a competitor such as Poreda, they are a harsh reminder of how it feels to almost make it to the top. “It’s something I work day in and day out for,” Poreda said of his quest for a championship. Still, he’s determined. That determination was tested two weeks before his freshman year of college when he lost control of his car and skidded off the road and into a tree. Poreda had to be pulled from the car by the fire department and suffered a mild concussion as well as a fractured tibia. Fortunately, he made a full recovery, and since the accident occurred in the off-season, Poreda didn’t even miss a start. “Those were a tough three or four months,” recalls the 6-foot-6 southpaw. “I would wake up early to do some lifting, then I had rehab, went to classes, had practice and did my homework. It was a definite struggle.” He overcame the struggle, and went on to record 17 wins during his three-year college career at the University of San Francisco; not bad for being an average player growing up. “I was young for my grade, so I was picked on a lot,” he said. “I had to work hard and just do whatever coach told me.” After being drafted, Poreda pitched for Great Falls in the short-season Pioneer League, where he went 4-0 with a 1.17 ERA in 12 appearances. This will be his first full season in the White Sox organization, a challenge the loyal Halo gamer is looking at optimistically. “I really haven’t stopped pitching in the offseason,” Poreda said. “I’ve kept throwing a little bit everyday trying to build endurance, so my arm should be ready for a full season. Hitters at this level will be tougher, but I just have to keep my composure and do everything I can.” The Northern California native is a self-proclaimed “contact pitcher,” whose fastball usually ranges from 91-96 mph. The White Sox drafted him specifically for his ability to induce ground balls, a necessary trait for any pitcher wanting to succeed at hitter-friendly U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago. In addition to his fastball, Poreda is working on his off-speed pitches. “At any level you need to be able to change speeds and have a couple out pitches,” he said. “I’m still trying to stay out in front on my slider, but everyday it gets a little better.” Poreda was scheduled to get his first start during the team’s opening game April 4 at Kinston, but play was suspended in the third inning due to a power outage. His first full outing came at home this past Thursday. While the final line was good, two runs, one earned, off five hits in innings, what was more impressive was how he regrouped after allowing runs in each of the first two innings. Poreda says his goal for this season is three-fold. “Stay healthy, fill up the strike zone and win a championship,” he said. Funny, there was a little more emphasis on that last one. 3,5, and 7 Game Family Entertainment Ticket Packs on Sale Family entertainment packs get your family to see all your favorite promotions!
