Fill-in Backup Catcher: Gustavo Molina

Williams said the Sox wouldn't shop for a backup catcher. Gustavo Molina, a defensive specialist who has played only 10 games at the Triple-A level, appears to have the edge over former major-leaguer Wiki Gonzalez.

Molina, a .237 minor-league hitter, has the inside track because of his knowledge of the Sox pitching staff. He was one of the final cuts in 2006 and has drawn frequent praise for his handling of the staff.

"I feel great with my defense and working with the pitching staff," said Molina, 25, a native of Venezuela. "The key is being on the same page."

This is the best possible answer for a shitty solution. I like Molina and the way he's been playing (defensively) so far. As fquaye said, who cares about his hitting anyway? We've got a killer middle of the order, we don't necessarily need him to be a fantastic hitter. In fact, hitting is the least of our worries right now.

Then it looks like Molina is the man for the jarb. He can't hit for shit.

Hopefully he won't be too much of a rally killer when he is batting. That's all we can ask.

1. Javy is out of baseball- Any job is still a job, he can't afford to be picky. Besides he was paid by colo in full, he plays for peanuts for anyone now.
