View Full Version : Phil Rogers Admits He May Have Been Wrong About the McCarthy Trade

It's still REALLY early, but it's good to see baseball know-it-alls like Phil Rogers admit that they jumped the gun a little in proclaiming this trade completely one-sided in favor of the Rangers.
Danks, 21, exudes confidence, on the mound and off. That might be the edge that allowed him to come from out of the pack to snatch Garcia's old spot, which once seemed certain to go to McCarthy, then most likely to Floyd or Charlie Haeger.
"He's got great makeup," the Rangers' Adair said. "He's a great competitor, a blue-collar guy … a solid young man."
This spring I've asked executives and scouts from other organizations how they see McCarthy, and the consensus is that he looks like a middle- or even a back-of-the-rotation guy, not the kind of guy you build a rotation around.
The scouts who know Danks seem higher on him, even though his fastball is similarly in the low-90s. He's left-handed, his curveball can be a weapon and his intangibles are almost off the chart.
According to a major-league source, the Tigers targeted Danks as a player they had to have in any trade talks with the Rangers last winter. But whenever his name came up, the Rangers asked for somebody like Jeremy Bonderman or Joel Zumaya.
One of their scouts was stunned when he heard the White Sox had been able to get him for McCarthy.
Also, this was interesting:
Garcia, traded to the Phillies after a season in which he seemed to lose his fastball, could run the radar gun up to only 85 m.p.h. before leaving a start Wednesday complaining of a tight bicep. His uncertain status makes Williams seem wise for trading him, even if the pitchers he received in return (Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez) have been pounded this spring.

Many more KW pwnings to come... many, many more...
I can't gloat since I wasn't huge on the Freddy trade either. Right now the part that looks good about it is that Freddy's suckin it in ST and is now possibly hurt. I'm considering it a wash as of now, but it's still too soon to say.
As for McCarthy, the move will probably win some sort on Nobel Prize for Pwnage by the end of this season--- which starts in a week, btw.

Here's an article from the Dallas Morning News entitled "Danks For Nothing? (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/columnists/ksherrington/stories/032507dnsposherrington.36727d0.html)".

i have dislike ONE trade in the past 3 years: the geoff blum trade, because I thought Meaux was pretty good.
Well, that wasn't right, and I wasn't necessarily wrong to be ho hum to the Blum trade (despite his WS heroics) but it learned me not to question KW.
IN fact, I was glad Freddy was gone, period, regardless of who we got. Since we got Gio AND Floyd, all the better.

No ...........Phil Rogers, who is considered a heretic on some websites, at the time surmised that the SOX may have been thinking financially making those trades as opposed to short term. To tell the truth ......... I think the SOX were doing a bit of both ......

I think the Sox thought McCarthy had an inflated trade value, so why not get some value for him? Plus, the word on the street was that he was last in the clubhouse, first to leave, and that he kinda liked the sauce. And I'd wager that deep down McCarthy probably thought he was languishing with the Sox.

Yep. And in turn, they got the highly-touted prospect the Rangers were asking Jeremy Bonderman or Joel Zumaya from the Tigers for. We got him for MUCH cheaper than that, so it seems...

there is no such rumor.
there is a verifiable rumor that he pounded butt, figuratively, on the mound last year

haha well I don't think I would of talked about that unless the topic came up in conversation. And considering that was on WSJ, it is highly likely the conversation steered towards pussy.
My mind does not work when I'm drunk, and apparently fuck the Rangers and fuck the Trib were the only things that came to my mind. But I always knew this would be a great deal for the Sox. I'm just glad others are starting to see this now.

I understand that Rogers and his Cubune brethren think the McCarthy trade was financially motivated. OTOH, I still have absolutely no idea how a reasonable and honest person can think that. If KW were dumping salary, he would have kept the dirt-cheap McCarthy and dumped more of the $10 mil. / year pitchers.
I said it at the time of the trade, and I'll say it again:
McCarthy + whatshisname for Danks + Massett + Rasner =
Good prospect + 0 for great prospect + good prospect + marginal prospect =
Dumb trade for Texas + nice trade for us.
In other words, the brain of the Rangers' GM is half the size of KW's brain. It's science.
