View Full Version : Brian Anderson: Utility Player?
the fluffer

caught this nugget on the latest Adam Russell lovefest at chisox.com
While Buehrle and Russell will draw the most attention in Sunday's game against the Rangers, Brian Anderson is scheduled to get a rare start in right field and hit ninth for the 3:05 p.m. CT first pitch. The White Sox are watching how Anderson adjusts to a utility role, the job he most likely will have if he breaks camp with the team.
I guess we'd better get used to Erstad in CF. :jagoff:

After seeing Erstad's ST performance, I don't have a problem with him starting but if this is the case, have Anderson playing in Charlotte this season. Anderson on the bench is Chicago is a waste.

Uuuugh, lame. Anderson is a great defensive player and they won't give him a fucking chance. :kukoo:

Erstad is a Gold Glove centerfielder when healthy why is everyone against this? I love having Erstad in center

he hasn't been a GG centerfielder in how many years?
and he hasn't been healthy in the OF in how many years?

furthermore, the GG means more about offense than defense, somehow....and his offense has been......mediocre lately, at best

I'm not exactly opposed to Erstad being in center (at least as much as the other guys), I'm pissed that BA is getting shafted again. I'm sure Erstad will do just fine and if he doesn't, at least we have a backup who we know is good. I don't see why they just don't fucking trade BA anyway, we "apparently" don't need him and he might actually get the chance to play on another fuckin' team.

[Insert "Wong is Right" tag here].
This whole thing is going to fester and be a mess unless Ozzie just gives BA the job to lose. Surely BA knows another couple of months of .180 hitting is not going to keep him in the majors.

Yeah, and BA was pretty damn good during the second half.

Putting Mack in center every other game is hardly giving BA the job of starting CF.

no, he handcuffed him. When someone has the job to lose, they don't get platooned and they don't lose 200+ at bats to a replacement level player.
If Paulie slumped, he wouldn't have been subbed in and out with Gload last year. That's because it was Paulie's job to lose. I'm not saying BA has earned the respect that Paulie has earned, because he hasn't. I'm just saying Ozzie has never looked at CF as BA's position, whatever the reason for that is

Comparing Paulie to Anderson is unfair to Paulie.

The only solace I can give is this:
If Brian Anderson in somewhat limited playing time (he could still get 350+ AB's doing nothing but backing up all three OF positions) hits respectably as we know he is probably capable of doing, he won't be on the bench at the end of May.
BA will get his at bats, and Erstad will get his starting spot for the first couple months. After that, may the best man win.

I like the way you think. ;)
Obviously, I think this whole situation is a load of bullshit. "Earning your job", my ass.

Comparing Paulie to Anderson is unfair to Paulie.
That's why he said Anderson hasn't earned the same kind of respect as Konerko.
This pisses me off. The same thing happened to Rowand when they kept trading for Everett, but Anderson has a much higher ceiling than Rowand. Let him play! I like Erstad, but as a bench player/platoon player only.

I knew Ozzie would find a way to mess this up. Who else is stupid enough to think that Anderson should ever play a corner OF spot on this team?
I can't wait until June when Erstad and/or Pods are sucking, and when Anderson's numbers are deceptively bad because he has only been playing once a week against "favorable matchups" like Johan Santana.
Alternatively, Anderson will get a burst a playing time, hit .290 for a stretch, and then get benched infavor of a .650 OPS player with superior "grinderishiness"--a factor that apparently does not include good defense.
