View Full Version : Jury Duty

...is one of the wonderful benefits of our democracy. I just wrapped up a two-day stint. It was a civil trial involving a woman who was rear-ended. Both drivers were in a company car and so the plaintiff was suing the company for damages, including pain and suffering.
I was selected for the first 18-person group and they questioned us all morning. Near the end, they had me on the hot seat and were questioning my views on trial attorneys and pain and suffering rewards. Apparently, they did not care for my responses, because I was excused. Nevertheless, it is always neat to experience the legal system every so often...

I enjoyed my jury duty experience.
very interesting stuff... I didn't agree with the final settlement given though

If you don't do jury duty, you don't get to complain about the OJ verdict.

I've never been called for jury duty, and it's highly unlikely that they would select me.

I've only been called once, and that was by the State of Illinois after I had been a legal resident of California for two years.
I obviously told them to GFT.

Did you mention your allegiance to the stockdale triumvirate? If so, does that mean stockdale is recognized and appreciated in the court system?
Also, never been called

They don't pick lawyers.
My wife, mom, in-laws, roommate...they all loved jury duty. I'm disappointed I'll never get picked.

I did not know that, is there any particular reason why they don't select lawyers?

Oh, and if you've been on a jury, c'mon, dish the dirt.
I did not know that, is there any particular reason why they don't select lawyers?
The rationale is, I believe, that the other 11 jurors will just defer to the lawyer, which can be iffy depending on what kind of lawyer it is, etc.

Hmmm, that is kind of disappointing.
I would have thought it would be because of the possibility of a consultation with a lawyer before the trial began.

They'd certainly never pick me for a criminal case. Aside from my job, they tend to ask questions like "Do you think that police officers are more truthful witnesses than non-police officers?" I'd probably bust out laughing, thinking of all the naive people who answer "yes."
They also ask questions like "Have you been the victim of a crime, the relative of a victim of a crime, a witness to a crime, or related to a police officer?" Since answering this question in detail would require a 30-minute monologue, they'd probably dismiss me rather than waste time listening.

I was empaneled on a jury once, down at the Daley Center. It was a suit related to the traffic accident. We found in favor of the plaintiff but didn't award them the full amount of cash. It was past eight after we got out. I found out that the only fast food place that's open past 6 down around there is the Wendy's on Clark & Madison.

I was on a jury in Jefferson County, Colorado in 1996. The case was a county jail inmate being charged with assaulting a police officer. Pretty basic, cut-and-dried stuff.

Did you come to a verdict?
I pictured you taller.
I don't think that picture is to scale
