...except that one time.. oh, well

From a GQ interview:

GQ: Isn’t the new global threat we face even more dangerous?

Powell: What is the greatest threat facing us now? People will say it’s terrorism. But are there any terrorists in the world who can change the American way of life or our political system? No. Can they knock down a building? Yes. Can they kill somebody? Yes. But can they change us? No. Only we can change ourselves. So what is the great threat we are facing?

I would approach this differently, in almost Marshall-like terms. What are the great opportunities out there—ones that we can take advantage of? It should not be just about creating alliances to deal with a guy in a cave in Pakistan. It should be about how do we create institutions that keep the world moving down a path of wealth creation, of increasing respect for human rights, creating democratic institutions, and increasing the efficiency and power of market economies? This is perhaps the most effective way to go after terrorists.

Good thing you stepped up when you needed to...

Powell was the sacrificial lamb of the Bush administration.

My thread title would have been "From the 'A Day Late and Dollar Short' File."

Powell was the sacrificial lamb of the Bush administration.

Truly a tragic figure in American politics. What an ass he must feel like to this very day.

Tragic is a bit strong. He is a military man, through and through. As such, his only two options were resign (since he's really can't buck his boss) or do W's bidding. He chose to do Bush's bidding.

Tragic in the sense that he did make that choice to the detriment of his entire political career. That he did so against his own common sense and beliefs for what he believed to be a lesser of two evils, which ended up being the sole evil...

I mean, we're talking about going from the only credible person in the entire Bush administration, which is no large feat, to becoming one of the least credible persons in the country.

tragic, just tragic

My remaining memory of Powell will always be, him looking like a beaten dog, giving that speech in front of the United Nations.
