Ireland's team has just knocked the mighty Pakistan out of the Cricket World Cup!
:D :rolling:
The Baseball equivalent of this would be the Bristol Falls Sox knocking out NYY.
I reckon it'll be the craziest St. Patrick's Day ever seen in Jamaica.
Good work Irish fellas - who have now nearly made it into the last 8 of the competition!

Cricket is marvelous.
Bowler vs. batsmen.
Bowler has essentially 6 pitches to throw, which is called an "over." Then he cycles out for a new bowler.
Batsmen usually bat defensively. If they give the ball a good thrashing they dart across the pitch back and forth; as does his partner. Each time they BOTH past the line 1 run is scored. A batsmen does this until he is out.
He can be out by hitting the ball and is caught on the fly (much harder than a baseball and the fielders don't wear gloves, except the wicket keeper [catcher]).
He can also be out if someone throws the ball hard enough at the wickets (located behind the batsmen and looks like a couple of sticks in the ground then some chalkboard erasers laying acrosst them) to knock the fucking thing over while the batsmen are still running between the lines.
OR he can be out with the glorious "Leg Before Wicket" rule in which the bowler insists that had the pitch not hit the batsmen leg it would have hit the wicket which the umpire must make a judgement call on immediately, and ONLY if the opposing bowler screams the words "HOW'S THAT!?!?!?!" as promptly as he makes his bowl. Tis' a glorious rule.
Each time has 10 players and each has to bat before the innings is over. One inning in cricket is always called an innings. Since a batsmen can essentially hit for about 4 hours in a row, thus making Derek Jeter a bottle of vagisil, this is why a cricket match can last 5 days and usually ends in a draw.
You win if you have more runs than the other team and the other team is "all out" or they quit. Or they have so many injuries that they simply cannot field a team anymore.
Hence, its encouraged generally for bowlers to aim directly at a batsmen throat or temple.
Marvelous game.

^ What he said!
:D
Yep, the bowler has to bounce the ball off the pitch before it reaches the batsman (which adds another variable/layer of unpredictability to where the ball will go).
The bowler is allowed to aim for the batsman's face, throat, crotch, etc if he wants to (hence all the body armour and hockey goalie pads they all wear).
Also, they keep the same ball for 80 'overs' - so by the end of that time the ball has hit the dirt at least 240 times, and it will have deteriorated markedly if the batting side has been smacking it all around the park.
Oh, and the bowling side is allowed to spit on it/wipe sweat on it to shine it up. Obviously, they only polish one side of the ball, to alter the way it moves through the air - it is the ultimate 'spit ball'.
A batsman getting 100 runs (a century) can take a very long time indeed, which is why it is applauded so much when it happens - because the longer he bats, the tireder he gets. Also, you try concentrating on a Cricket game for a whole day.
Now imagine that a hard ball is being aimed at your face at 90+ mph.
The main psychological difference between Cricket & Baseball is that the mental attitude of a Cricket batsman is more like that of a Baseball pitcher, and the Cricket Bowler's is more like that of the Baseball Hitter.
Why?
Well, in cricket the batsman has to make a load of runs, and can only be out once - he only gets one 'life'.
Giving up your wicket (getting 'out') is like giving up a bases-loaded HR.
The bowlers WILL give up a load of runs, but they only have to get ten 'outs'.
So, it's more like being a hitter in MLB - where you know you'll make lots of 'outs', but you are trying to hit as many runs as possible.
In short:
Baseball - lots of outs, few runs;
Cricket - lots of runs, few outs.
Oh, and it generates more stats than Baseball, so if you're a propellerhead, Cricket is the game for you.
