View Full Version : progression of mainstream "black music"

In the 60s and 70s we had motown which fucking rules.
How did that die out and hip hop and rap take over?
Motown=great jams and timeless to say the least
rap=forgettable lyrics and horribly degenerate attitude towards women and life

It will fade. The suburban white kids jumped all over it to rebel against their parents, but now I've noticed (in my experiences) that the white community has distanced itself from rap.
Maybe it's just my generation since as I get older fewer and fewer people my age listen to rap. In 6th grade (97-98) rap was huge. High school it was big with the minorities and the white trash kids. College it kinda disappeared. You only heard it at dance parties.

I'm just saying, the progression of black music starts with blues, at least popular music as we know it today.
I'm talkin about the buil up from the early days of blues and rock to motown and the backwards quantum leap (heap?) to current day stuff.

You'll never find a satisfactory answer as long as you paint rap with such a large, shit-covered brush.
Yes, there's a shit ton of garbage rap that is pushed by the music industry. This is not actually what rap is nor is it truly what hip-hop is or was at its outset. There is a natural flow of innovation stemming from early rural blues to R&B to motown to soul to hip hop.
You can have the same objections about mainstream punk if you wanted-- simply for its a-punkness.

um what?
a.) I never said rap is the best music blacks have done. I think the motown era stuff and the late 40's early 50's blues is the best, to say nothing of ragtime and jazz
b.) I gave a very well defended, carefully thought out defense at why rap is legitimate music. You're the fucking cockslapper who said "rap's bad because it's stupid and I only like 2 songs"
this was your worst post in the history of this board, Loftus. Get with the program

I despise rap. Almost as much as country. The best black music was in the 70s with Motown and then as it evolved into disco. Once disco died, black music sort of lost its' identity in a vague "R&B" category until rap came along. Oddly enough, my favourite black artist/poet is Gil Scott-Heron, widely viewed as the grandfather of rap.

The 80s rappers kind of rode the heels of rock and rollers to break into the mainstream. And the rest didn't exactly explode or anything. I think Loftus is right in that rap first really took off, and on its own merit, around the 1989-1991 era.
that's a pretty simplistic way to look at it

Call me crazy, but it hasn't been since the last few years that we started hearing about how "legendary" old school rap is. The sad part is that "old school" refers to fucking 1985!!!!
When I was in grade school I never heard about that shit. All I heard about was Puff Daddy, Biggy, and Coolio. That was it. My point is rap didn't really TAKE OFF until gangsta rap.
Everyone knows there were hits in the 80s. Rappers Delight and Run's shitty remake of Walk This Way with Aerosmith...and I don't know what else. That's all I know of. If someone denies that then they're dumb. But rap didn't TAKE OFF, in my opinion, until guys like Ice T, NWA, and Coolio.

If you mean when did the white kids really start to pay attention to it, then yeah, we can go to NWA and after.
But if you're saying that THAT is when rap gained merit as a musical/ cultural force, that would be wrong.
I think that, like Wong was saying, rap isn't going to disappear all of a sudden after 30 years just because stupid crackers stop paying attention to it. It's bigger than that.

Simmons was a huge rap mogul, of course he made millions but that doesn't mean rap was taking the country by storm. And the Beastie Boys were just as much rock as they were rap in those days. And they're fucking white and so are their fans.
Weak examples. Come stronger next time.
not at all weak examples. more like you don't know shit about non 70's classic rock music, so you have no basis for arguing this
how do you think simmons became a rap mogul? You can't be a rap mogul unless there's a huge market for rap music.....you piece of shit
CaptainBallz
08-15-2007, 02:54 PM
Yeah, but "stupid crackers" comprise most of the country. That is kind of a key demographic for mainstream success.
I didn't say rap was nothing until Public Enemy guys..
stupid people = mainstream/ mainstream = stupid people...
the point remains that rap has been a cultural force since the early/mid 80's and has its roots pretty firmly set. So to try and diminish it as soxfan was tring to do because it only became hugely popular in the early 90's, therefore making it less culturally ingrained, is naive to say the least.
And hell, even from 1991 makes it a mainstream cultural force for 16 years!!
And throughout that 16 years, there's been smarter rap folks bitching about the gangsta/thug/bitches and hos bullshit.

Furthermore, it still has been a mainstream force for over 20 years, anyway..... since at least 1985
but whatever  whether it was a cultural force doesn't matter in terms of quality. it's not like indie rock wouldn't have been good if it never was coopted by the oc.....its quality would stand on its own terms
rap is quality whether it's marketable or not...

I've argued this to the extent of my knowledge on this very general subject and I've made all true statements.
The point on Simmons is it doesn't take Garth Brooks-like record sales to become a millionaire. And my original point was that rap didn't explode until gangster rap came about. That's not perception that's just a fucking fact. Sorry you and Michael Bolton Ballz get huffy about it. I never said rap wasn't good until whitey started to notice it.

I have never and will never say anyone's opinions are wrong. There's no such thing as opinions that are wrong.
There are such thing as opinions founded on a fundamental lack of knowledge, and you have them in spades (no pun intended)
You keep dropping irrelevant information about your personal life in this discussion. Does anyone care that you never heard of NWA until 93? You were, like, 7 then. Did anyone really think you'd have heard of them in 1988 when they became huge, when you were fucking 3 or whatever? And even if you were 15 in 1988 and hadn't heard of them, personally, that didnt' mean that Straight Outta Compton wasn't an immensely huge record.
What is your malfunction? Are you honestly this stupid, or are you just typing so fast that you don't have time to think about what it is you're typing?
My ripping of rap music is due to the ridiculous lyrics, lack of any real instruments, and lack of any vocal talent. It's a disgrace and embarassment to real musicians.
Once again, you display your fundamental lack of knowledge. If you had mentioned certain rappers and said you didn't like THEM for that reason, I would disagree, but it woudln't be a roundly ignorant and stupid statement. But to claim that RAP as a WHOLE suffers from this problem is borderline retarded and emblematic of the idiocy of your posts in general

I know what you mean and I expected this response. I'm basing my opinion off of what rap music has been for 15 years now: the gangster rap era.
Unintelligent lyrics written by thugs who talk like they got marbles in their mouths accompanied by unoriginal beats because 1 out of 3 fucking rap songs now samples someone else's song. And guess who they sample 90% of the time: rock musicians! I mean someone sampled Crazy Train recently for crying out loud.
If you want to get technical and start spitting out all these underground rappers who are "loyal to the genre" or whatever, I don't care. Nobody cares about them or they'd be more famous. And I don't mean record sales determine if you're good or not, but if you're not known at all then you must not be that good. In the 21st century with file sharing and online music, it's pretty hard NOT to get your name out there. So they can't use that excuse either.
So let's summarize here: 80's rap -- I don't like it. 90's/2000's rap: sucks.
Note the BIG differences between "I don't like it" and "it sucks"

Quit talking about it and go listen to 3 Doors Down.. They're huge and widely popular.. therefore AWESOME!

I mean someone sampled Crazy Train recently for crying out loud.
you're not being any less ignorant by saying this. Ok--you don't like Trick Daddy's "Let's Go." Fine. I don't particularly love that song. That doesn't say anything about rap as a whole.

Let's summarize here: you still have no idea what you're talking about.
the 1990's was one of the most fertile periods for rap music with some artists doing exciting, daring, and innovating projects that would shape not just rap music but music in general. And it "sucks" but 80's rap "doesn't suck"?
You clearly have no idea what you're talking about.
You don't like rap. Fine. But don't act like that gives you license to be an idiot. Because it doesn't.

You are an ignorant fool. I have come to the conclusion that the Atlanta Braves are the greatest sports team ever, this is based upon the last 15 years.
For a little guy who brags about how much money he makes, you sure aren't the sharpest knife in the drawer, huh.
Instead of these baseless attacks on me, how about we read what I type instead of immediately bashing me? First of all Chips, as usual, this post is a steaming pile of shit and doesn't relate to the conversation at all. So go back to making lunch plans.
And CW, how did rap shape music in general!!!! Maybe the 2 year rap rock stage with Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, and POD, but that's it! All it has done is create a group of goofy 14 year old white suburban kids who talk with a south Compton accent. And a 23 year old Asian from Wisconsin who likes to write freestyle lyrics on a White Sox message board and constantly defend the rap genre. :laff:

Ok, I totally forgot where this conversation started, but I looked back and found we were all having a civil conversation until Wong came in. What else is new.
I said rap will fade because in my experiences I have found that rap is not nearly as prevalent as it once was. Then I partially retracted my statement and said that maybe it's just people around my age because they don't listen to rap anymore.
Wong says it's going to fade after 30 years. Nobody but poor blacks listened to rap 30 years ago because they were the ones making the raps about their lives. Then I said it didn't get really big until the early 90's, so a more accurate statement would be it won't fade away after 15 years of huge popularity. I think that's fair to say. And it won't go away, it will just not be as big as it once was. I still feel that's true.
Yadda yadda yadda, my words get twisted around as usual, and here we are. Wong and his butt buddy teaming up on me again. It's all so predictable.

^That was a typo. You said it won't fade after 30 years. Pretty easy to figure out. If you'd just take a deep breath and relax for a second you would of caught that.
I'm basing what I know about the history of rap off of documentaries I've seen on TV about....the history of rap.

I don't get pissed that you hate rap. I can't care if you hate rap. Congratulations, you have an opinion.
What I get pissed about is
a.) you think that opinion applies to anyone beside yourself...and not just that but categorically to an entire genre of music in terms of quality

Alright now to make an actual contribution to the thread.........
We might see the progression of mainsteam "blackity black black music" on Sept. 11th. 50 Cent and Kanye West both have albums coming out. Fitty is regarded more as gangsta while Kanye is more of the conscious rapper.
Previously 50 claimed if Kanye outsold him he would stop making solo albums. He went back on that statement but still thinks he will be #1 for that week.
However with Common recently debuting at the number one spot and IMO Kanye will no doubt be number one as well, maybe we are starting to see a shift in mainstream rap?

it's not that YOU DON'T AGREE
it's that you're trying to say a genre of music sucks for the mere reason that you don't like it.
There's a lot of people on this board who hate rap (like Zoso, for instance, or Yoda) who i don't give shit about it...because they don't try to say that just because they don't like it it sucks.
it's an easy distinction to understand, but you seen hell bent on ignoring it and distorting the issue

We saw this in the late 90's/early 00's with the rise to prominence, almost simultaneously of The Roots, Jurassic 5, Mos Def, Common, Dilated Peoples and Talib Kweli
( I know The Roots and Common had been around, but they really took off in that period...)
There's no, like, "bend" in rap that you can point out. It's like Q-Tip said: "Things go in cycles."
During every period in rap there's both mainstream pop stuff and socially conscious, thinking-man's stuff-- early 90's, mid 90's late 90's, even now with Kanye West.
I'm not the one who started all this shit. Yoda, Zoso, and myself were having an actual conversation until you came in and started calling me an idiot, and other insults.

Where have I presented my opinion? All I've been doing is presenting facts (like that rap has been around over 30 years, or that rap isn't just for "poor blacks"[you racist piece of shit] and never was).

I said rap has been really popular for around 15 years. I don't know how long it has been around before then, I don't even like rap. I wouldn't know.
Rap was created by poor blacks living in the hood. They wrote raps about their lives. Why does that make me racist? At least that's what...I think it was Rev Run said on one of the documentaries I saw.
