I haven't given a shit about Nine Inch Nails in over 10 years, but this is a ridiculous and pretty damn creative marketing campaign:

From some dude's blog:

"The new Nine Inch Nails album, "Year Zero," is due in stores 4/17/07, but the concept and even moreso the marketing behind this record is nothing short of genius.

To support the record, Trent Reznor created a series of bizarre fictional websites and message boards that take place in a not-so-distant future where church and state are totally in cahoots, human beings have no civil liberties, and the government puts drugs in the public water supply to fight bio-terrorism.

A single from the album, "Me, I'm Not," was supposedly leaked via a flash drive that was left in a bathroom stall during a NIN show in Barcelona.

Any and everybody should check out these websites associated with the album*. The creativity behind projects like this are what keeps my hope for music alive. Even if you aren't a fan of the music, I think Trent's assumptions about America's future are dead on, and the planning that went into the whole "Year Zero" storyline is really amazing:

(*Note- to really read what's on these sites you have to highlight the words....once you get there, you'll understand what I'm saying.....)

http://anotherversionofthetruth.com/ (click and drag on this picture long enough and watch what happens)

http://iamtryingtobelieve.com/ (official website of Parepin, the drug that's fed into the public water supply)

http://www.churchofplano.com/ (the government-run church of Year Zero)

http://www.consolidatedmailsystems.com (http://www.consolidatedmailsystems.com/) (the mail service of Year Zero...to access the site type in 'nooneimportant' where 'citizen_unknown' is......try to click on any other section and watch what happens..)

http://105thairbornecrusaders.com/ (the military troop where the Sniper, a character in Year Zero, received his training)

http://www.uswiretap.com (http://www.uswiretap.com/) (contains several 'classified' documents.........to
access the site, type in case number 71839J......this one is probably the scariest site...if you REALLY wanna be freaked out call 216 333 1810....)

http://www.bethehammer.net/ (the Sniper's 'blog,' if you will......this one is HIGHLY recommended reading)

http://artisresistance.com (http://artisresistance.com/) (the site to download desktops and wallpaper, but done with a twist....once accessing the site, try to click and highlight any words and watch what happens....)

http://hollywoodinmemoriam.org (http://hollywoodinmemoriam.org)(a site dedicated to Hollywood after it is destroyed by a fictional Islamic attack on Oscar night...)

For more insight on the album, storyline, and other hidden goodies, you can check out the NIN forums (found here: www.echoingthesound.org) There's literally layers upon layers of stuff to be discovered.....(including links to mp3's being given in MORSE CODE.)"

Pretty cool.

Thanks for finding all those!

Did you see the thing about the static at the end of My Violent Heart? I guess when you view the song on a proffesional mixing board the static creates a phone number which was a line to an actual crisis line when viewed on the equalizer!

are the web sites supposed to intentionally look like they are scrambled or just shitty??

www.anotherversionofthetruth.com is pretty sweet - if you click and drag around it draws another picture.

Yeah, as it says, you basically have to click and select all the text to read it.

Trent might make a movie out of this too. I hope to The Maker that he's the actor and not some geek.

When I saw NIN last year Trent was BUFF AS HELL and he shaved his head.

Bump

I finally checked out the mail system one, fuckin creepy.

A friend of mine burned me a CD with 4 songs from the album and I have to say that they are great.

I get that angry, rebellious feeling I get when we used to crank metal and KMFDM and cruise around while in HS. I love that feeling.

My Violent Heart and Survivalism are pure NIN gold.

Yeah, except that was probably just an example of some douche overloading their page with crappy polls and "You are Phoebe from Friends!" surveys.

As much as I love NIN I hate their fans.

But you're bound to have that I guess.

Dude, that's exactly why I never got into them. Although I did like With Teeth for the most part. But those fucking black wearing NIN shirt kids in HS...:jagoff:

Yeah.

When we saw NIN in Milwaukee a year or so ago I looked around and was flabbergasted.

Fucking awesome show man

Here's what I was talking about with the static. The static at the end of My Violent Heart creates an image when viewed as a spectrograph:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/ab/NIN_My_Violent_Heart_spectrograph.jpg

Me, I'm Not also creates one for the phone number 1-216-333-1810 but I can't find the image for that.

Interesting note: This is the "flag" of the US in this futuristic world. I was doing some clinical time for my class today in an ER and they have a vision chart for children/illiterates and it's full of symbols and this flag was one of them!

It was slightly different and was a square not a rectangle.

It caught my eye

Year Zero has leaked online.

I didn't listen to the whole thing yet, but I think overall is kind of boring, maybe it grows on you, I'll have to give it a few more listens.
