View Full Version : Garland/Erstad/Dye looking good .....

After giving up 3 runs in the first, Garland settled down yesterday and threw 3 shut-out innings, hope he's getting over that hump.
Erstad went 3 for 4. Dye went 3 for 4 and launched another bomb to LF that again nearly hit the street!
Oh, and Scott Pods played and went 3 for 4, with a Stolen Base!

I'm really thinking Dye will be the league MVP this year. He's improved consistently since joining the Sox and has no signs of letting up. The only reason he didn't win it last year was the fact that the Sox didn't make the playoffs.
Hopefully they can work out a deal to retain him before the offseason.

Garland worries me.. I listen to that lineup and it pretty much as a B lineup for the Brewers.. He is getting thrown into the #2 hole this year is last I hear.. He can't be having the same type of years as before and expect to succeed.
Erstad, looking more and more like a sweet steal of a deal.. 1mil for him.. Ahh Hell yeah!
Dye.. I think the guy is going to have a little downfall this year.. I can't see him hitting 40+HR this year.. 30-35 is reasonable.

I don't know why garlard gets no respect. It really doesn't matter where you pitch in the order once you are thruogh it once. No1s pitch against No3,4,5s every day and vice versa. The bottom line is Garland regularly gives us 30 starts and 200+ innings and has put more wins on the board for the Sox (and pretty much more than anybody else in baseball for the last two years). At some point, people will start recognizing the results/effects and realizing there is a cause, that Garland is a very good pitcher in a baseball era in which nobody's winning 20 games anymore.
Erstad looks like he's beating out BA for the job. I agree. I thought of him as an excellent 4th OF for us, someone to "platoon" with BA as Mackowiak tried to do last year (love Macs bat, but his fielding was hard to watch). But this guy looks a lot better than he has for several years, plus he's obviously what the Sox need at the top of the order. And he plays slightly deeper than BA, so your not always wondering if the ball is going to fall in as you do with BA. Personally, I like the outfield with Dye, Erstad and Pods with Ozuna and Mac as subs. That way they can bring E. Perez up as 1B/DH. Send BA back to AAA.
Dye. I don't know what gives you the idea that Dye may not hit as many HRs as last year. Is he not healthy? Is he having a bad ST? Is his stroke changed? Does he lack motivation? He came very close to winning the MVP. I do think his move to the 3 hole in the lineup helped his power numbers last year, especially RBIs, but he can produce out of the 5 hole too. I think he will lead the way rhis year on the Sox - for three players hitting 40 or more HRs. I see this guy playing like Thome for the next 5 years. And he'll probably earn a Ton of money, playing for some other team.:(

Garland threw nothing but 12-6 breaking pitches in the first inning yesterday, so those 3 runs meant nothing. After he got a feel for the pitch, he was LIGHTS OUT, strained shoulder or not.

Garland leads the majors in shutouts and wins in the previous two seasons. He is also 4th in innings pitched and 6th in starts. How a guy pitching in the AL Central with those feats along with a 4.00 ERA in the same span doesn't get more credit is beyond me. The other thing that pisses me off about Garland's rep is that he doesn't care. If you watch him in the dugout, he is always the first guy to walk over to the defensive players patting them on the back when they bail him out or patting a guy on the helmet when he gets a big hit. Just because Garland is controlled and cool on the mound doesn't mean he doesn't care.

Regardless of CF and the outfield rotations Ozzie will put together, I would love to see what Perez could do DHing against the tough lefties. Thome hit at some ridiculous average and slugging last year against righties (something like 330/660) but was god awful against lefties.

Dye's a beast, plain and simple. Both he and Greg Walker have stated that he didn't have a chance to break out in Oakland because he was forced to take pitches, work the count and all that Billy Beane OBP bullshit instead of just hitting the ball. He's healthy, motivated and can rake. The only thing to consider is, did he have Jim Thome, Paul Konerko, Joe Crede and AJP in the lineup with him in Oakland? I am sure he sees a lot more hittable pitches than he did in Oakland's lineup. But.. I don't think there's a reason to suspect any regression from JD, not yet at least. He's 33, its not like he's passing 40. I just hope he can hold up for 150 or so games out in right field. Like I said before... it doesn't matter who is leading off for the Sox... Mackowiak, Erstad, Iguchi, whoever... as long as the feared Dye/Thome/Konerko trio is following, lots of runs will score.

I can't fathom how people who've watched baseball for decades still don't know stuff like that which make ST results totally irrelevant.
I don't even watch ST and I know that.
Is there anything you don't know?

Dye shattered the hell out of his previous career highs in power numbers, plus he's in his 30s and has an injury prone past. He can do it again, sure, but given those circumstances, I wouldn't bet him having another year like last. I'd expect something more like his 2005--.280 30 90 or somewhere around there, if healthy.
Thanks for your comments. At least you have a basis for your comments- his health, his injury prone past. But those are circumstances that do not exist. If healthy? Dye? Wow. You must be blind.
As far as an injury prone past, I am not sure that is quite his history. He did suffer a major injury in Oakland. But, Dye has shown no signs of injury during his two years in Chicago. So it is more believable that the "injury prone" label is in the past. He's healthy and is more likely to repeat 2006 stats than what you hope for.
The only thing that may affect his numbers is the likelihood that he will bat in the 5 hole all year. However, I am betting that Dye, Thome and Konerko all hit 40.

You're going to lose that bet. Look at their career #'s. Only Thome is a GOOD bet to hit 40+ and he's what? 37? So he's NOT really a great bet

You need some work yourself. If I sound condescending, you must really have personality issues.A little insecurity, huh? That probably explains "the little bully boy" that peaks through your posts. Blow it out the other end. Talk baseball.

Good point about career numbers. I didn't say it would be a good bet, or a sure thing. I am optimistic in ST, like all real fans. You are right, none of the metrics would indicate that any of them will hit 40 in 2007. But I bet that you too could make a case for any of them to hit 40, regardless of the career #s.
Thanks for making a baseball response.

I can see how you are confused about condescension. You said "Even in your good posts you sound like a condescending shit. You need to work on your communication skills". You describe yourself. That probably is also true when you use the terms shit and prick.
Further, I thought I made it pretty clear that I don't care what you think. I don't care how you want to characterize my posts either. I am here to talk baseball. If you don't like it bitch, take it on in.

Dye has had 2 fantastic seasons since coming to the White Sox - and we're incredibly lucky for that. But I don't think you become less injury prone the older you get. That's just biology. So 2 years of no injury, while great, also means two years older, and therefore more prone to injury. And since JD DID have a major injury a few years ago, that's always going to be a concern.
EvilleFan
03-16-2007, 10:05 PM
You're right. He is two years older and playing a sport where anybody at any age can suffer injury. But from your comment, I don't think you would describe Dye as injury prone, either. If you could sign him today to a five year contract at $75 - 80 million, would you or wouldn't you?
I guess I just see him as healthy, we'll actually, he's a beast. But there is a difference between an "injury prone" player and one that gets injured. Pods is the definition of injury prone, Rowand is a picture of injury prone - god love him. Dye seems a lot healthier. And he's not that old is he. What 35 maybe. I was just making that point in response to Zoso's comments.
EvilleFan

Pretty much. I tried above to "talk baseball" with you above and we saw how that went.
I don't follow? I appreciated your response and I thought I gave a straightforward response to you? Dye is neither injury prone nor unhealthy. He's played an average of 140 games the last three years. Now an injury could occur this year, but other than he is getting older (it turns out he was 33 at the end of January), what real basis is there for such a statement. I just refuted that in my comment.
While I did make a comment about how you must be blind (sorry, if that offended in any way) if you thought him unhealthy, I did not flame out on you and call you any names or anything. I just gave you my opinion and view of it. I just didn't buy into your characterization of Dye as unheathy or injury prone.
Look, I am not going to change or anything, and I know you are a moderator and have some sort of ownership feelings, etc. but I am only here to fill in the time between seasons; to "hear any news or gossip about the Sox; and, to talk baseball. There are several folks who post on this board that I'd like to "talk baseball with"; but I don't have to do it here or anywhere for that matter. Just FYI, a lot of us are friends and some people on here have been posting together on various message boards for years. While we all came together because of our love for everything Sox, we don't always talk about the Sox all the time, especially during Spring Training when there isn't quite as much to talk about ... yada yada yada.
My point is, the Locker Room threads and stupidity are probably never going to go away. I honestly feel like people have been creating more Sox related threads just for people like you who have been complaining about it so I honestly don't understand the issue here anyway.
In fact, it looks like you don't have a single thread in the Sox Dugout. What the hell? You have the nerve to bitch at us for not posting more about the Sox when you haven't even made one thread to contribute to your cause? In fact, it seems like even you aren't posting about the Sox. If you go through your posts you'll see that most of them are just complaining about this board. If you hate it so much, fuckin' leave already.

A lot has to do with being in an A's uniform. He's a lot more free here in what he has to do than he was in Oakland. He was a beast in the second half of 2005, which carried into the playoffs and then into 2006. I see no reason why he cannot continue that (maybe not last year's numbers, but close to them).
Maybe they were freak injuries? He hasn't had a serious injury in three years. If he was injury prone, then he would have ongoing problems, which he hasn't. Griffey...he's injury prone; Dye hasn't had injury problems in a few of years, so I think he injury prone tag should be taken off.

there's two sides to this
a.) DYE IS NOT INJURY "prone".
b.) Dye played out of his mind last year and ismore likely to revert to his 05 #'s which are much closer to his career avg, than to put up something like his 06 #'s
