Is this correct? I'm hearing he's "retired."

I haven't heard anything, but I wouldn't be surprised.

FWIW, he last pitched on 7/25, and MiLB still lists him as "active."

He has struggled this season walking more guys than striking out.

He must've realized he sucks (something the rest of us knew five years ago).

I realize we're just wildly speculating, but that's too bad. Would've made for one of those nice after-school-specials on the local kid made good

Don't tell that to Duane Shaffer.

Don't tell that to Duane Schaffer.

I thought Honel was a Ron Schueler production?

Shaffer was the senior director of scouting the year Honel was drafted.

From the Tribune:

… Kris Honel, the Sox's first-round pick in the 2001 draft, informed the organization he is retiring.

Honel, a star at Providence High School, battled right arm injuries and missed all of the 2006 season because of surgery.

Honel was 2-2 with a 5.79 ERA in 17 games (12 starts) for Birmingham.

Honel doesn't want to retire from baseball, just the White Sox. He wants to go to the Cubs farm system...

WTF is this all about? He's essentially "pretending" to retire just so he doesn't have to play for the Sox anymore? Sounds like he hates the organization and would rather play anywhere else.

They way the Sox treat some of their prospects, this doesn't surprise me. :depressed:

I dunno. It sucks for him that he's doing this, but I guess he has no other choice. It's really sad.

He could persevere and try to improve so he can pitch for the team that drafted him. This is kind of a rat move by him.

If you read the quotes from Sox brass, they seem happy to see him go. There must be some weird backstory here...

You know, I for some reason read that as Regier is his agent, even though I know he's the Sox director of player development. Yeah, I guess that they may be happy to see him go or they just don't want to be harsh with a 21 year old kid they feel has quit on them.

I doubt that Honel's problems have anything to do with a lack of support from the Sox org.

I would have dumped him a couple of years ago.

Good riddance, I'll take your position on the roster.

I definitely would have taken his signing bonus.

Looking at his stats, he was 24, not 21, so yeah, no big loss here and he was moving in and out of the rotation anyway.
