"When I said that I 'bet on my team every night,' I was referring to the chances that I was taking - that WE were taking as a team trying to make history and break down the barracades of LOVE. And I AM guilty. I'm guilty of loving my team TOO MUCH. Am I wrong? Sure I am. Wrong for loving my team too much..."

I agree that Rose should be in the HOF. If he bet against his team then it would be a different story but since he bet on his team who the hell cares.
Remember that its only cheating if you get caught, otherwise its just part of the game.

Okay, also if O.J. claims he didn't actually do it then he deserves to walk among us.
Um yeah! I can see how you're comparing murder to cheating in sports. Thats got to be the worst point I've ever heard on the subject of cheating. You must be proud.:jagoff:
Did it really hurt baseball by Rose betting on his team? No it didnt. You want to talk about real cheaters lets talk about pitchers that have been doctoring baseballs for decades. If ya want to knock me saying thats ok as long as they dont get caught thats fine cause thats a valid point to make, not OJ. Come on dude I expect better from you.:D

Ok. Thats fine but what about the pitchers in the HOF that threw spitters and scuffed the ball with all kinds of shit? Is that ok?
All Rose did was bet on his team to win which had nothing to do with the outcome of the game unlike pitchers doing illegal shit to a baseball. Just asking is all.

I don't believe he only betted for the Reds to win. I don't trust him.

Meh who really cares about the HOF when it's all said and done? If Santo isn't in there then it's not legitimate...

Jesus, the point is Rose is a fucking liar just like OJ. "Oh, he says he just bet ON his team, so he's clear." Wrong. For one, it still compromises the integrity of sports to have those participating in them gambling on the events. If you play sports or coach sports, you don't gamble on sports, period.
I can't believe people still listen to that clown.
I'd like to add to this somewhat, because you touched on the most important point.
The truth of the matter is that even if Pete Rose is telling the truth about only betting for his team, it doesn't mean a God damned thing because it compromises the integrity of athletic competition.
The banning of Pete Rose from the Hall of Fame sends a message to not just baseball players but all professional athletes that gambling will not be tolerated no matter what the intent was. If professional athletes get to gamble, suddenly games start getting fixed. Players start booting plays on purpose. Umpires start skewing the strike zone. Bookies start calling the shots. The entire framework on which athletic competition is built falls apart. Suddenly pro sports are no different than the WWE.
It really is a slippery slope.

Thats fine and you are entitled to your opinion. You believe whatever ya want but IMO he still belongs in the HOF for the numbers he put up on the field.
So tell me this. If a player corks his bat and gets caught or a pitcher doctors a baseball and gets caught does that make them inelligible for the HOF? If yes then their should be alot less pitchers in the HOF.

It might cause some players to actually give a shit about the team.

When you cork your bat or doctor a baseball, you're cheating at the game of baseball. However, your actions are not a threat to the actual game. Sure you're a scummy dude and nobody likes you for it but the game goes on.
When you give players a pass on gambling, you risk everything about the game losing its validity. Nothing is real anymore. It's all a facade.
Your examples are bad, but they are not a serious threat to professional baseball as a whole. Gambling by league players, coaches and staff is.

So corking a bat or doctoring a baseball wont change the games validity even though these things could decide who wins and loses. These things dont hurt the integrity of the game? I just dont feel theres a difference between gambling and doing something to possibly change the outcome of a game. Cheating is cheating.

If you think one player on the field out of a minimum of 18 corking a bat is the same as someone in charge of 9 of those 18 people having money on the outcome, I don't think you get the essence of competitive sports.
There's a reason why MLB is different than the fucking WWE.

If I dont understand the essence of competitive sports then feel free to educate me. I wont change my stance on Rose but that cause I admittedly am a biased fan and grew up as a kid watching him play and appreciate him as a player. However I am open to suggestion.

Let's put it this way: what if a Sox manager decided to manage the 2005 Sox like Terry Bevington so that he could make money betting on the Sox?
Do you really think that's the same as one lone wacko with a corked bat?

LOL. Bevington is a bad example cause I never liked the fucker but I do see your point. No it's not the same. Dont get me wrong...I never said Rose did not cheat. I just said I think he should still be in the HOF and thats it. What can I say it's just my opinion thats all.

Rose signed a contract in which it was specified that he was not allowed to gamble on games, period.
It also says that if he gets caught gambling, he becomes persona non grata to the world of baseball.
For ever.
(cf the 'Black Sox'.)
If you can't do the time, you don't do the crime.
Rose knew the penalty.
He did the crime.
He got caught.
Now he's bitching and whining about it.
IMO he got what he deserved.

That's another thing...it's not like gambling on baseball as an issue came up for the first time with Rose. The rules are pretty explicit--and I don't remember a "if you get more hits than anyone else in MLB history, we'll put ethical considerations aside and let you merrily gamble away" clause.

Moral giants. Sheesh! The Cardinal Rule of baseball ?
One form of cheating is okay and another form gets you exiled for life?
I am not that way; but the Jesuits taught me that an absolute is an absolute. All cheating is the same.
Clear the HOF out! I bet everybody in it gambled at some point. How do we know that they didn't bet on baseball? They are all OJ's.

The clincher in this argument is a thing that the Jesuits clearly did not teach you (after all, why would they?), but which any fule kno; it is this:
In all the World, there is only one 'crime': Getting Caught.
Pete Rose Got Caught.
This fact nullifies your point, laudably moral though it is.
