this will be interesting. I wrote this guy off for the first couple of months
in order to get himself ready ..................... I don't want him anywhere near the outfield if he isn't ready

I still say hold him out till May.. Cold weather and pull groins just doesn't sound like a good combo.

Agreed. Why the hurry to re-injure?

exactly, he himself said he may have rushed himself last season ..........
I think he sees Darren Erstad playing some decent outfield and now hes worried ............. Hold him out til May, let him play in AA

We have enough options with Erstad and Pablo.. also Robby Mac.. LF is not a huge concern to rush back on. I would like him to come back and be the man he has been before.. ie Twins Player.. Get on base, steal a bag..

Right, because those Twins players are lighting up the fantasy charts with their astronomical stolen base totals.

Seriously, their top guy last year had 25 SB's. That's hardly "get on base, steal a bag" territory. I'd like to see him come back and do what he is capable of doing too, but even in a bad year last year he was better than anyone the Twins had at stealing bases.

YOu forgot that this thread offered Elfskin or whatever his name is the opportunity to glow about his beloved Twins.

Next post will be about the dominant Phillies bullpen.

If Podsednik plays at a good level the rest of spring training healthy, without shoulder, abductor or groin problems then what is the point of not having him in the lineup? If he's bunting and hitting to opposite field he's hitting for average; and, if he's stealing bases, he's winning games. Have you guys ever seen the stats on what percentage of games the Sox win when this guy gets a hit. It's huge, in the 70s. This is baseball, there is no way Pods stays behind if he is at all healthy.:D

They don't steal allot this is true, but the run the bases the right way so they don't have to. First to 3rd is not uncommon with them.

I agree that the Sox are a better team with Pods getting on base and stealing but groin surgery is not something that heals fast. Efil made a great point too about the cold weather not helping too.

The Sox are gonna see alot of lefty starters cause we play so many divisional games in the beginning so more than likely Ozuna would get the call anyway to lead off and play LF. Erstad can hold the fort in LF til Pods comes back. No need to rush Pods cause we wont lose the division in the first month of the season anyway.

I’ve hesitated posting about this because I know the Pods lovers are few & far between.

I was very encouraged by his "B" game yesterday. Not only did he go 3-for-4, but he swiped a base and got a bunt base hit! That's so huge for him, especially since bunting wasn't something he excelled at for most of last season. I was one of the people who was glad they re-signed him because I really do believe he just had a down year. Heck, a couple of the guys on the team experienced sub-par years (see Buehrle, and Contreras in the second half) and I think everybody deserves some slack.

I know Podsednik’s numbers are really good in odd-numbered years and I really think he's going to have a year like he did in '05 when he set the table for Iguchi and the other guys behind him.

If Pods can get his OBP back up to a respectable level, rather than the .330 he hovered around last season, I really think it'll pay dividends for the team.

Thanks, DaleJrFan! It's good to know my posts (and I) are missed. :)

I've just had a lot going on at school (a.k.a. work) this week and haven't had a chance to post.

From this morning's Cubune (http://http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/cs-070315soxbits,1,5837613.story?coll=cs-whitesox-headlines):

Scott Podsednik said he felt no pain Thursday after playing his first game following Jan. 23 surgery to repair a sports hernia.

"I feel great, other than just this sinus congestion," Podsednik said.

...Podsednik will make his Cactus League debut Friday in left field against the Cubs at Tucson Electric Park.

This is AWESOME! The one thing he was worried about after Wednesday's game was how he'd feel in the morning. Sounds like he feels great!

And by the way, the game is on WGN today at 3p with Hawk & DJ making the call! :nana:

I know the Pods love is pretty minimal around here, so I guess I'll be the one giving the unofficial "Podsednik Update." ;)

From the Sox homepage: (http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070316&content_id=1846690&vkey=spt2007news&fext=.jsp&c_id=cws)

Following Podsednik's Cactus League debut during the White Sox 7-6 victory over the Cubs on Friday at Tucson Electric Park, Ozzie Guillen believes his leadoff man has that accomplishment well within reach.

"We should count on him for Opening Day. We should talk about him," said Guillen of Podsednik. "The way he is right now, he's going to be on the 25-man roster. I don't think he's going to be on the [disabled list]. If everything stays the same, he should be on the team."

In addition to this positive news, I thought Pods looked pretty good defensively out there, too. He made quite a nice diving catch of a DeRosa fly ball in the 3rd.

If the guy continues to be pain-free and improve, then I look forward to seeing him run onto the field as part of the Opening Day introductions on April 2!

Pods had a down year last year, due to putting off this nagging groin injury he had since Spring Training of last year. I'm glad he had the surgery and I think it's going to make him better than ever - most importantly because he'll feel comfortable stealing bases and sprinting for infield hits, which is what made him so valuable to the team. I think a good start will have the Pods fan club back in full gear after a big let down in '06.

I really hope you're right because he deserves it. One bad season does not a career make.

While the timing of his surgery raised some eyebrows, it looks like it was the best thing he could've done for himself and the team as a whole. Pods looks as energized and focused out there as he did two years ago. I also believe that he's not going to be so hard on himself this year, which was a major reason his OBP was so low- he was trying too hard and worrying too much about getting on base and setting the table for the other guys in the lineup. A relaxed Pods at the plate and in the field is nothing but good and exactly what the team needs to get back to Grinder Ball!

Pods did have a bad year in 2006 and a lot of people don't want to cut him any slack. Nobody's perfect, right?

I know he had a bad 2004 with the Brewers, but I was thinking more in terms of his time with the Sox.

And by the way, thanks to everyone for not being critical of my optimism for Podsednik.

Did anyone see him play the outfield today? Was he able to chase any down? How did he look? Is he going to be ready by opening day?

Yes, yes, good, and despite my earlier reservations, I think so.

Pods looked real good out there, almost reminiscent of 2005 Pods. He was aggressive with hitting and on the bases, he looked quite comfortable in the outfield. I honestly thought that he shouldn't rush things but he's looking much better than he was in 2006 even, to me. I would have no issue with him playing opening day if he looked like that.

Scott Podsednik finished 3-for-5 with a walk and two stolen bases during Monday's Minor League game....

The positives continue to pile up for Pods! I really hope he regains his 2005 form because I believe this team needs that kind of jolt and can only benefit from it.

When the season is over [Erstad] is going to have 500 at-bats.

I'll take the "under" on that. Either he lands on the DL or (God forbid) he plays through an injury and sucks worse than usual.

It's extremely disturbing that Ozzie believes it's is a good idea to rely on Podsednik and Erstad this many ABs, given their injury history and suckatude v. LHP.

I don't deny that the Twins are pesky and are talented at working the basepaths, but that's not what you originally said. You said, specifically, that their style is to get on base and steal a bag which is false.

Furthermore, I don't judge everything on fantasy statistics. I simply determine whether or not claims are demonstrably true or false. Yours was demonstrably false. Are the Twins better on the basepaths than us as a whole? You betcha. Can a single one keep up with Scott? Not a prayer.

To clarify, when the claim is that a team steals whenever they get on base, total steals is a valid indicator. Period. Regardless of actual baserunning skill or other nuances involved.
