View Full Version : Blackhawks Statistically the WORST team in NHL History

It's hard to find hockey experts these days, but most will argue that the Blackhawks are the worst franchise in the sport's history. (In fact, in its Ultimate Standings, ESPN The Magazine once named the Blackhawks the worst franchise in all of sports.)
.....
Hey Chicago, at least you're not subjected to the misery on ice at home via television. That pesky local blackout is just the Wirtz family's way of looking out for you.

One of my biggest regrets growing up was that I never got into hockey, which was 100% the fault of Bill Wirtz.

I'll agree. Going to a 'Hawks game, having a few beers, and watch some hockey should be the thing to do in this city.

I wouldnt say its the worst
One of my biggest regrets is never seeing a hawk game at the stadium, when the UC got put up, that signaled the demise of the hawks, since then, the hawks were just not the same

For awhile in the 80s, the Blackhawks had the hottest ticket in Chicago. People would give up their first born male just to get a place to stand in the upper corners of the old stadium when the Hawks were in the playoffs.
It's unbelievable how low Wirzt has dragged that organization into the toilet. He should be run outta town and the Wolves should be awarded an NHL franchise. The Blackhawks are a disgrace to this city - The Cubs on ice.

Same here. I don't like hockey enough to ever get really into it, mainly because I had zero influence growing up, but if the Blackhawks were actually a good franchise I could definitely get behind them.
Oh, c'mon, Zoso...That's pretty weak!!! ;) Neither did I (heck, none of my family was ever remotely into sports, always desiring to go to the opera or musicals instead :kukoo: ). Blackhawk hockey still is the #2 most important thing in my life next to my sweetheart.

if they were the cubs theyd be selling out, hawks are lucky to draw 6-7,000 a game
But this is a "new" trend, hell 03 or 02, i had to get standing room only for a dec 23rd det v hawks game

Truth be told, up to a decade ago, the Blackhawks had an unfathomable streak of 28 straight years that they made the playoffs. That dates from the 69-70 through the 96-97 season!

True dat!!! Indeed the HOTTEST ticket in town!!! My dad had seasons through work right under the organ, the whole barn would shake(literally) when the organ and the crowd were goin'!!! WGN used to even have the games back in the day. We didnt grow up in any fancy house or area of the city, but the fact that I got to go to almost every HAwk game made me one of the most enviable kids on the block. I wanted to be Tony Esposito more than anything when I grew up. We never had the money for me to actually "play" hockey back then but man I used to pretend and play games in the street all the time. I sure miss Blackhawk hockey!!!!! :( :( I can still smell the Ole Barn to. A combo of peanuts, beer, urine, and circus animals, and an old musty type scent to boot. Ahhhhhh Good times!!!!!!!!

Okay then, an ancillary reason is that it's about 1/8th as interesting and complex as baseball. Baseball I loved naturally simply because I knew it was great (I would have watched it regardless of parental or peer influence). But apparently hockey isn't good enough to draw one into it on its own.
I will say that I really enjoy playoff hockey involving a team I care about. I was pretty into Colorado during the Roy and Forsberg years. They had a great rivalry with Dallas and Detroit. The Hawks I've personally seen once in the playoffs and they fell to St. Louis (2002). Lame.
I think you do need some amount of influence. I didn't get into hockey until I was 12 and that was only because my uncles took me to a game at the Stadium. 12/23/90 against Detroit, first row in the second balcony behind one of the nets. It was nuts, the Hawks were the best team in the league and that place was unbelievably loud. I was hooked and it was my second favorite sport until about 2000.
As for the UC, that place is very good for hockey. The demise of the Hawks has nothing to do with that building. The culpability flowchart goes straight to Bill Wirtz. The UC was awesome in the 1996 playoffs against Colorado.

NOPE! Hell, none of my family members ever would take me to the games, claiming it was "savage and voilent." Meanwhile, they went to (and forced me to go to a great deal of) ballets, musicals, and operas at least four times a year. I had NO influence from anyone whatsoever. We didn't even have cable TV, so I could only watch the five or six games that were on FOX each year, listening to the rest on the radio. After years upon years of begging and whining, my parents FINALLY took me to a grand total of TWO Blackhawks games (during my last year of high school and second year of college).
Since moving out over 2.5 years ago, there have been 2 NHL seasons. I went to 16 games the first year following the lockout and 24 games last year. I'm looking to break last year's record this coming year. I just can't get enough of Blackhawk hockey!

If you classify the constant "bandaging up" job he and his crew have been doing with the roster. Seriously...Karpovtsev, Cullimore, Aucoin, Korolev, Salmelainen, Strudwick, Robidas (and the list extends into infinity)??? It looks like finally THIS offseason, they've begun to "gut" this team instead of the whole bandage treatment.

Yes, it's a historical fact that the Penguins swept the Black Hawks in 92. The Hawks blew 3-0 and 4-1 leads in the first game IIRC. They had control of the game and the crowd, but you could only hold Lemieux, Jagr, and Co down for so long. I also remember Jagr had a highlight reel goal to tie the game, and Lemieux the winner with about 12 seconds to go. Those Penguin teams were so good, they should have reeled off 5 or 6 straight Cups. The next year (92-93) they had the best team I'd seen in decades, but Kevin Stevens did a full speed face first dive on the ice, and oh yes there was that goal by David Volek. End of would be dynasty. We'll see if Crosby and his pals can revive the old Penguin magic. I'm surprised that Pittsburgh was able to keep their hockey team. What a dead in the water, rust belt metro area that is. It makes Buffalo and Cleveland look dynamic in comparison. Unless of course you're dazzled by that 20 something nightlife on Carson Street. Yeah, Pittsburgh sucks all right, but the Penguins set the Hawks on that downward spiral they've been in for so long.
