I have a baseball-ignorant question regarding the Sox 25-man and 40-man rosters....

With Podsednik most probably starting the season on the DL in extended Spring Training or AAA... who takes his roster spot? Judging by the NRIs in camp that aren't White Sox prospects, it would appear that in Pods absence and assuming Ozzie only takes 11 pitchers north that Eduardo Perez would make the team out of Spring Training as the 25th man - with Erstad starting in LF and leading off.

Since Perez was an NRI... would he need to be moved to the 40-man roster if sent to AAA? If so, how does this impact his player status and contract status with the Sox? Assuming Perez is indeed the 25th man on the opening day roster, what happens with Perez upon Pods' return? Since Perez signed a minor league contract, does this mean that if he makes the team out of Spring Training that he can be sent down to Charlotte when Pods comes back? Or, does he need to clear waivers in order to be moved to AAA??

It might be beneficial to the Sox to bring a guy with out of camp who has remaining options (someone like Owens maybe...) and keep Perez at AAA to start the season in the event of a late season injury or a prolonged injury.

Was'nt Perez inked to a 1 year minor league contract. If so then that would solve the problem, at least with him anyway.

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, so forgive me if I'm being too basic here.

Everybody who is on the 25-man active roster also must be on the 40-man roster. Using Perez as an example, if he makes the team out of Spring Training, he has to be added to both the 25-man and the 40-man. If he's sent down, they'll take him off the 25-man but probably will leave him on the 40-man. Whether he has to clear waivers depends on whether he has any "options" left (unlikely). If they want to take him off the 40-man too, IIRC he'll have to be DFAed aka "designated for assignment"--placed on waivers but not necessarily released. If he doesn't make the team out of Spring Training, they can just assign him to Charlotte.

On second thought, this isn't very basic. I guess baseball rules are just inherently confusing.
