View Full Version : I kind of freaked out with my son yesterday..

I was gathering laundry last night for today. Going into Anthony's room I found a shirt I never saw him wearing before. This shirt has a big picture of Captain Crunch smoking a huge joint (except his name was Captain Blunt). Apparently..he was wearing this shirt with his friends, etc and out in public (really nice)....and I had no idea.
First..he's 9 years old. Second, either he bought this shirt somewhere or someone gave this to him. Since he's only 9 he may not even know exactly what it means.
I threw it in the trash (where it belongs) and he's pretty angry. Then instead of taking a few breaths and calming down a bit to have a good talk..I did the yelling..face red..etc. thing. I don't think I got my point across.
Now I'm starting to get nervous as he get's older. If I react this way over a T-Shirt....what about 5 years from now if he's starts to experiment with the things some teenagers do. I know this sounds pretty bad..but I was so upset I had trouble sleeping last night.
Did I completely overreact? Thoughts?

I think you overreacted, mostly just because it doesn't sound like your son understands what you're mad about.
He's nine years old. He probably doesn't understand what cap'n blunt means and why that upsets you. Cool down a little and explain to him that that wearing that shirt means he takes drugs. Tell him you got upset because you don't want people to think that he takes drugs because that makes him look bad and it makes you look bad.
You also ought to find out where he got it and why he wanted to wear it, since I really doubt your 9 year old son is a pothead...then make a decision about that accordingly

All I can give you is the perspective of an ex-9 year old, since I am not a parent. You have every right to be upset with your son and to throw the shirt out. Though, it seems to me that this could provide a good opportunity for you to have "that talk" with him about all that fun stuff that so many parents never address (mine included).
You may have overreacted a bit, but you can use that to your advantage to go back to him and apologize for getting so angry, but then explaining why you took it so seriously...
Then ground him for two weeks...

I think the important thing is to make sure your son understands why that shirt makes you so angry. He's only 9 and like you said, he may not really understand what it means. As long as he gets the message and maybe even learns something, this whole incident will be productive as opposed to just a fight between you and him that didn't mean anything.
I'm not a mom yet or anything, so... I don't exactly have a whole lot of experience in this area but as a counselor, that's my best advice. Also, I would try and figure out who gave a 9 year old that shirt...

Good advice here. I think you may have overreacted but understandably so. I think you should try to explain why you got so upset and why that shirt is not good to wear. But thats easy for me to say, I have no kids.

Your son is pretty cool.
You're a dick.
Oh..classy post... :D
I'm not saying there is anything wrong if someone does that at all (live and let live)...not so long ago I did the same thing (I prefer it to alchohol to be honest with you..at least there are no hangovers)..
But once you are older and experience certain things..you lose that part of your childhood you never get back. I just think there is something wrong when I am now seeing things with 9 and 10 year olds.that I remember at the age of 15 or 16.
When he is older and goes off to college and I think I have shown him right and wrong..he is completely free to make his own choices. I trust whatever he choses to do..he would be responsible about it.
A 9 year old should not be going to the mall..hanging out with friends, etc..as a walking reefer adverstisement. Maybe I'm crazy..but I feel there is something wrong with that..
But I guess you're right..I'm a dick..I should encourage him to do as he pleases...maybe we could go father and son shopping for bongs tomorrow..After all..it's important that your kid thinks your cool..

thanks..I'm sure he does..(I did act like a dick last night..he's a good kid and I hate it when I lose my cool)..
They grow up pretty fast....turns out today he was pretty angry because I was wearing his running shoes. I couldn't believe they actually fit.
He does know what the shirt meant. Still won't tell me where he got it from. I was honest and did not lie that I was pretty active in that myself at one time. You're an adult for six decades or more (if your lucky). I just told him to try to stay a kid and enjoy innocence as long as you can..Once it's gone..that's it.

I'm carrying Tony's torch.
I don't agree with him at all. That wasn't the appropriate reaction. What he's describing is the reaction if you actually catch him smoking a blunt, not wearing a harmless t-shirt.
 Why do I have the bad feeling you're the guy he'll be hanging around with 10 or 14 years from now?

Hey, you asked for our opinions and I'm the only one who didn't sugar coat it to give you the answer you want. I think you went too hard on him and I've been there (a lot worse actually) and it's no way to grow up. But hey, I'm just an idiot with no kids.
By the way, I don't even smoke weed. Never have really except the occasional bowl hit.
I'm not mad or anything..I agreed with a lot of what you said (I did overreact)...most of the last few posts were laced with humor (the posts were laced..not the weed)..:omg:
(the posts were laced..not the weed)..:omg:
That shit's scary as hell and is a huge reason I don't touch weed or any of that shit. I had a friend last year who smoked, and one day he took a hit of some shit that had LSD and some other shit in it. He spent 3 months in the hospital and now is on all these mood drugs...he's never been the same.

If that's not an urban legend, I don't know what is.
Although, one time I smoked a bowl in college that was laced with peyote. I was high for 3 DAYS, son!
