View Full Version : Fifth Starter Fuckup Flashback?

A day old, but not a great indication of how the great fifth starter search is going:

By now, the White Sox had hoped to anoint Gavin Floyd as their fifth starter, thus explaining the trades of Freddy Garcia to the Phillies and Brandon McCarthy to the Rangers.

It's just that Floyd—and none of the others who has been given a chance at the vacancy—are cooperating.

Thursday's games against the Rockies went a long way toward deciding absolutely nothing. Charlie Haeger started a morning 'B' game but allowed eight hits, three walks and four runs (two earned) in 31/3 innings. In the afternoon 'A' game, Floyd allowed five hits, one walk and six runs (two earned) in three innings.

Fuck... how relieving was it to be done with the "hold your breath every five days" debacle that we went through a few years back? If we go back to getting shelled every time our fifth starter steps on the mound, we're fucked this year.

Somebody gots ta' step up. What's James Baldwin up to?

Easy dude. Step away from the ledge! Danks pitched 3 scoreless today on two hits that were erased by 2 DP's,0 ER, 0 R, and had 7 ground ball outs. I would call that not only a great day but an efficient one as well.

If Haegar and Floyd dont start getting it together, Danks could very well seperate himself from those 2 and really give something for Ozzie to think about.

I still believe we will be fine and Im not at all worried.

Didn't Crede commit an error in Floyd's last outing, extending the hell out of an inning?

Yup. Floyd just had 2 earned runs in that game. Shit happens and these guys have only been faceing live hitting for a few weeks.

That came off pretty dramatic, I know - but I don't really mean it as a "sky is falling" post as much as a "hmm... this may be a problem". I never put much faith into ST numbers, but it's starting to dawn on me that we might be in for an adventure every time it's #5's turn - regardless of who it is...

Good news about Danks, though. :fap:

I am in no way worried about any fifth starter controversy. If indeed Gavin Floyd wins the fifth starter rotation spot out of spring training – and is unable to perform during the season, the Sox have both Gio Gonzalez and John Danks to step in.

As for Danks and Gio, both have been surprisingly outstanding, stats-wise so far. What little I saw of Danks, he was hitting his spots on the corners and his curve is pretty nasty. Fro mthe sound of today’s radio broadcast, he is also working in a slider/cutter, that he was able to throw for strikes. Meanwhile, Gio has been equally impressive. Cooper was quoted as saying Gio needs to develop a changeup to compliment his fastball/curve combo to be successful. From what I’ve seen, his change looked pretty damn good…

Gio has given up NO runs and Danks only two. Their ERAs are 0.00 and 1.50…

While Haeger has given up his share of meaningless spring training runs, everyone always talks about knuckleballs not dancing in the thin AZ air… so I am sure he could step up and eat some innings at the big league level.

Any three of these guys can step in if Gavin Floyd is sucking by May 1st. I'm not holding out much hope for Floyd, though. My bets are on one of these three guys making regular starts by mid-May, at least.

Yeah, and then he turned around and gave up a 3-run jack to the next batter. Errors will happen, but you gotta pitch around that shit. :hello:

Nah, that reaction is understandable...Sox fans should remember those years in '03 and '04 when the lack of a reliable 5th starter was a HUGE factor in keeping us out of the playoffs. I just hope somebody steps up or maybe KW makes a trade if nobody does by May or June.

But the way Danks has been going...maybe he does have the stuff to make the jump from AA to the bigs.

Danks did spend half of last season at AAA and was lights out in his last 6 games of the season. Danks could be a real possibility for the 5th spot if he continues to throw strikes and get the ground ball outs which are so important when pitching in the Cell. Remember Buehrle got called up from AA and has never looked back. This 5th starter race is going to get more interesting!

Sooner or later we will have to go through the growing pains of these youngsters so I say let it get started now.

Floyd's going to be the 5th starter. You can send Haegar and Danks down, no problem, but sending Floyd down deflates whatever little value he still has.
