I keep hearing, reading.seeing on TV how Chicago is such a huge Cubs Town.

Personally..I don't get it. I would like to see some evidence. Most people I know from Chicago are SOX FANS...this includes quite a few people who live on the Northside.

I think the Cubs are much more popular OUTSIDE of Chicago and this is where the misconception is that Chicagoans love the Cubs..I work downtown and random things on people's desks..talking to people, etc..probably 2 out of 3 are Sox fans.

I have a theory..since Wrigley has become such a tourist destination the last two decades..about 60 percent of those who now go to Cubs games ARE NOT FROM CHICAGO. Since the only other option for Chicago citizens was to go to a Sox game..I think for the last few years more people have grown up Sox fans since the own citizens of Chicago were crowded out of Wrigley by trendy tourists.

To me Chicago is a SOX TOWN. The Midwest is a CUBS REGION...people who grew up in Chicago almost always seem to be Sox fans.

I just wish the media would realize this and stop referring to Chicago as a Cubs town because it really isn't.

I was just thinking this the other day, actually. I was taking the Orange Line from Midway to the Blue Line out to Damen (not a short ride, is my point) and in the time I spent in this transit I noticed a TON of people with Sox clothes on and only one person with a Cubs hoodie... but even that chick was wearing a Sox hat (yeah, weird, I know).

So, maybe it's because the Sox won the World Series in '05 or maybe it's because Chicago really isn't as much of a Cubs town as it seems... or maybe I had a skewed perspective because I was coming from the Southside? I dunno. To be honest, since I don't live in the Chicago area I can't experience these things first hand. Regardless, I agree with you in that it doesn't seem like the Cubs have quite the following everyone expects them to have.

You should've taken it up to Montrose so we could pound some brewskis. Beer!

I like beer.

Maybe Iowa is a Cubs region, but I think Twins, Cardinals, Brewers, Tigers, and Indian fans would disagree with the Midwest thing.

Me too. I'll be at the bar after work!

So, you're posting at work... but weren't you like, completely against that when you first got that job? In fact, I believe I remember you ripping on me a few times for it...

Yeah, most of my friends are from Chicago and they're all Sox fans. Chicago is a Sox town, the rest of Illinois is Cubs. Even then, the margin is not that great. I'd say southern Illinois is 40/40/20 Cards/Cubs/Sox

I'd say you'd be pretty accurate in your estimates there. Going to ISU sucked during the months of August, September, April, and May for that reason. It sometimes felt so lonely not hearing much about the Sox, even in the Vidette! In fact, the ISU and Bloomington/Normal papers were much like the Cubune when I went there--no Sox coverage, with Cubs coverage every single day. It would be interesting to find out how much that has changed since 10/26/05.
