This movie comes out tomorrow and has the potential to be my favorite movie. The trailer is already the best trailer I've ever seen, so I hope the movie holds up. If you missed my post in the history channel thread, Last Stand of 300 (http://www.history.com/shows.do?action=detail&episodeId=214233)is on tonight, a must see. I have my tickets for IMAX Saturday.

I haven't been this excited about a movie in my life, I don't think. My father in law to be, a pastor, is taking us to see it after his sermon on Sunday. He's a badass pastor, like Clint Eastwood in "Pale Rider."

Of all three I only liked the first one. Gladiator I could sit through most of it but I never enjoyed. Sin City I didn't care for at all.

I always thought Gladiator was a poor man's Braveheart. Gladiator was ok, but he didn't have nearly the depth or overall awesomeness of Wallace and neither did his movie.

Sin City was ok. You see it but don't really think much about it afterwards.

When I said, "you see it but don't really think much about it afterwards" I took what I did (saw the movie once than forgot about it) and ascribed it to everybody else in the world.

So, it matters little to me if it gets better with each viewing because I have not seen it more than once. Therefore, nobody else has seen it more than once and if they have, they shouldn't have.

My opinion still reigns supreme.

Let's just ride this tangent here. I always get into arguments about what constitutes a good "horror" movie.
Being the simpleton that I am, I always look for how "scary" a movie is to gauge how good of a horror movie it is.
Other people, cult horror movie fans especially, seem gauge their horror movies by how comedically gory/idiotic the movie is?

Back to 300... the more trailers I see, the more I think it's going to be a whole lot of style, and very little substance. Especially when the glowing reviews of the movie come from the likes of Maxim magazine.

And any time a reviewer calls a movie the "next leap in filmmaking" I'm wary. I'm trying to think of the last movies that actually earned that distinction. Star Wars, Jurassic Park, perhaps. Maybe the Matrix (though it probably changed filmmaking for the worse). 2001: A Space Odyssey most definitely.

For those of you with no idea of what the movie is about, here's a brief primer:

In 480BC, the million-man strong Persian Army was intent on invading ancient Greece, and assimilating it.

The Greeks were like 'fuck that shit man', but obviously didn't have that kind of an army, as they were at that time just a bunch of hick City States.

They needed to buy time to assemble their army, so one of the City States, Sparta, sent 300 of its finest warriors (plus a shitload of associated allies and slaves, whom no-one ever remembers) to block a very narrow pass called Thermopylae (it had hot springs), through which the Persians would have to come on their way to the main area of Greece.

They slaughtered shedloads of the Persians for several days, without giving way - reducing the elite branch of the army of the grandest Empire the world had ever seen to the status of a bunch of pantywaists.

The Persians told them to surrender repeatedly, at one point allegedly saying that they had enough archers to 'blot out the sun with their arrows' - to which the Spartans are supposed to have replied "good - then we'll have our battle in the shade".

The Persian Great King also offered bribes to the Spartans to let him pass, but they told him to get fucked - they were all about honor, and had no money in their society.

After a few days, they were betrayed by a traitor who showed the Persians how to get around the back and take them from behind (how Ancient Greek is that?).

They still refused to surrender, and fought on until they were all dead.

The extra time it took the Persians get past the Spartans allowed the rest of the Greeks to get their armies together, and also scared the shit out of the rest of the Persian Army.

The Persian invasion got repulsed, and eventually the Greeks went and conquered the whole of Persia (under the peerless psycho Alexander III of Macedon).

The Spartans were basically a cross between the USMC and the Klingons form Star Trek, but to the nth power, and pissed-off with it.

I will go and watch this film, but I too am concerned that it might take serious liberties with History.
Sounds like an enjoyable romp though....

(Actually, it sounds like whatever the opposite of a 'Total Chick Flick' is called. If you know what this is called, please enlighten me.)

The History Channel has been running a special on Thermopylae. They gave props to the Spartans, but argued that it pretty much was a case of superior tactics / strategery + rocky landscape + shitty weather FTW.

I wouldn't expect the movie to be extremely accurate, since it's base on a flipping comic book . . . oh, sorry, I mean "graphic novel."

Even though I knew the ending of the movie, I was still surprised at the end. Kind of like Titanic, but better. The ship's going to sink.

Let me just say, when Lionidis (forgive my spelling) gets down on a knee...well for those who have seen it, let me just say that scene was awesome.

Also, the end. When it pans out to the full Spartan army.

What I loved the most about the movie is how they portrayed the insane amounts of blood. It wasn't....gross. It was just cool and part of the movie. None of it seemed excessive. Kind of like the anti-Kill Bill.

Oh man, I want to see that movie again.

Sparta definitely was not "free" in the contemporary sense. They were a slave-dependant society with an elite ruling class.

The only "freedom" in this context is freedom from a foreign invader. The Persians believed they could have absolute military control over the known world and probably expected to be greeted as liberators by much of the Greek population (especially the slaves). The Greek ruling class (and the weather) managed to kill a suprising number of the Persians, forcing them to eventually abandon the campaign and return home.

Yeah, making this whole thing about freedom and potraying the Persians in such a negative light was probably a little irresponsible.

My friend works at the theatre in town and saw a screening, she said it has alots of boobs, violence and one liners

Only problem, to which i will associate with most people, she thinks its an excellent movie on greek history, when its probably as accurate on greek history as HELLBOY was accurate on nazism
Thing is (and I may be jumping in late) it is more based off of the graphic novel than it is the actual history. The history more or less just provides the background for it.
