96 taurus. Engine started to sputter mildly at times if i am at a stop or idle slowly. It feels like it may die the way it sputters. One place said its suggested i geta tuneup since it looks like the original engine parts(had motor replaced) should i blow the money on a tuneup or pay 30 somethin a half hour to have them try and diagnose the problem. Or could it be somethin else? Seems to only cause issues when im in 1st gear
Auto trans

also an addendum-how much should i look for\expect for a tuneup, been a few years since i had one

It sounds like it is mis-firing. Try a basic tuneup yourself, change the spark plugs, wires, and fuel filter. You can do it yourself for under $50.

sounds like a fuel filter to me. Especially if you press the gas at times and it is hesitant to respond.
If the car has not had a tuneup, you need to do that. At 11 years old you have some old plugs, wires etc.
If that does not work, I say the timing is off and you shell out the 60/hr to fix it.
Good luck.

Gimmee 10 bucks on the O2 sensor being the culprit. I'd let the shop run the diagnostic. Most the time they will take that charge away after they find the culprit, and you have the work done there. IMHO, you're wastin money at it throwin tune up parts at it blindly.

My roommate works for the Tom Sparks shop downtown. Hit me up if you want to stop by and ask him. He won't fuck you over, and they treat you good over there.

If it's a sensor, the "check engine" light should come on.

If you have no issues while the throttle is open (accelerating), it could be bad fuel injectors. May even be the valve on the throttle body or the idle / throttle positioning sensor.

I agree, except it has had a motor transplant he said, and, passed around, history unknown, I immediately am suspect of ANY sensors going off when they should.
Hopefully it's somethin simple for ya mang!! Keep us posted. I'd also like to throw $2.00 to show on a good throttle body cleaning.

accelleration is fine. Its if i decide to ride the idle or have it parked, it will sound like its struggling to the point where i would say its out of gas\dieing but i can drive it past 1st gear and it runs normally

I took it in and they said the light ment o2 sensor read mixture is too rich, i put about 3\4 of premium in after work and drove back, it didnt have any issues, will see

sensor light came on but for rich mixture reading. Ive had bank 1 o2 sensor and cat converter replaced last month
