My oldest is in 5th grade this year and it seems like this year more than ever they have an amazingly high number of field trips and whatnot that we have to pay for.

From what I can remember they have so far: done bowling for gym (had to pay for that), went skating for gym (had to pay to rent the skates), went to 2 different plays and next month are planning on spending 2 days and 3 nights at a local park. That will cost $90.

I realize that all of these are optional but most are done during class time and if she doesn't go then she has to sit in a 6th grade classroom while everyone else is out doing this stuff.

I don't remember going on half as many field trips the entire time I was in school.

That's insane!!
What the crap is the school thinking?

I believe we'd take one or two a year. Like zoso, there was only the one "big" one a year... (Field Museum, Brookfield Zoo, Great America, The Admiral...)

Field trips usually depends on the teacher. In my 9 years in the classroom, I have never gone on a field trip. IMO, it is too much of a headache. Organizing, getting consent forms, ordering buses, and working out the logistics of funding, and keeping track of these children outside of the classroom is not something that I want to do. If I take a class somewhere it is within walking distance and usually free. I do plan our senior trip every year, but that is over memorial day weekend and is totally optional. I don't look at it as a regular school field trip. We do have a teacher here who loves to go on field trips. She has taken her class to Mexican Fiesta, movies, restaurants, etc. Sounds like your kid got a few of them this year.

Oh yea. This teacher LOVES field trips. It seems like my daughter is coming home with a new permission slip every week.

One of the things she wasn't really interesting in going to but the teacher insisted that we should make her go anyway.

I really couldn't blame her because it was a play at a local college. I don't remember which play but I've never really been interested in theater stuff either. I went to a couple in high school but that's only because I was friends with a few of the actors.

Her teacher said we need to "broaden her horizons" because she's not interested in much other than staying at home and playing. I was the same way when I was her age yet my parents dragged me to every town between here and Timbuktu. I'm perfectly happy staying home.

Did you guys have to goto Robert Crown in 5th grade to learn about sex, puberty and the like. Presentations on what a vagina is, how a penis works, what is normal for pubert etc.
So many jokes that day, too little time.

:D

I could hit that place with a golf ball from my crib. I'd go more often if they had drinks. :jagoff:

I've actually never been...though Chasey Lain almost had me going one night a few years back.

Do you mean to tell me that the Admiral doesn't have ANY drinks?! What the hell's the point then?!
And nobody say "DUDE, THE CHICKS", because no, without $.50 bottles of Lite to go with them, they're usually hardly worth it.

Not to mention, last time I was there it was $20 to get in.

Fuck that bullshit.

only at SATC will a thread about school field trips be hijacked about a strip club.

I went to St. Bede on 83rd and Kostner. In 5th grade we just had a Sex Ed day(s) where they divided the girls and boys and taught us about the birds and bees. This was the school year of 84-85 and at a Catholic School, so I doubt it was anything too risque.

I remember in High School health class we had to watch this chick go to a gynocologist. She's got this crazy hairy bush and the doctor is telling her all about her body. Then he holds a mirror in between her legs and she goes "I can see my cervix!"

Blargh.

That's fucking gross. I don't want to see my cervix or anyone else's for that matter. I'll just survey the outside, thank you. I think the worst in my frosh health class was watching a baby being born. That is also some sick shit and reason #248 why PH13 will never be a mommy.

Yeah, I remember a video we watched there that contained breast feeding.

We had maybe 2 field trips a year plus an annual dance. Then the school / PTA got real lazy, and we didn't do anything for 2 or 3 years.

No sex ed for the boys in my school, though they pulled all the girls out of class for a serious talking-to one day. Trying to prevent a "Carrie" situation, I suppose. Come to think of it, the girls had lots of programming that the guys didn't have, especially after school stuff. My grammar school was pretty anti-boy.

My health teacher in High School showed up drunk one day. Funny at the time, sad in the end. She got canned and took her own life a few years later.

Listen up Mr Chicago Board Of Trade New York Stock Exchange, sometimes life isn't all fun and games like on an internet message board. Yeah, I know that you and all of your Good Time Charlie friends think it's cute to say "buttfuckery" and "vaginal orgasim" but in real life there are some harsh realities. I'm not sure how you've made it this far in life, mister, but you sure could use a dose of ol' Uncle Sam to tighten you up. Go on "Mr Funny Man with the witty comments and pictures", join up with a Marine battalion in Baghdad, we'll see who is the Debbie Downer.

I kinda figured that you spent a lot of time on North Halsted at some point in your life.
