When I went to UIC from 89 to 94 we had Gulf War #1 in the winter of 1991..

one Friday (the weekend before it started)..a bunch of students from an anarchists group ran around campus and started opening classroom doors telling us to walk out..

A bunch of other students (counterprotesters..this was 1991 when a helluva lot of people in their teen's and 20's were pretty conservative)..started throwing snowballs at the protestors..

Basically it ended in one huge snowball fight...

Captain, have you ever read anything by Matt Taibbi? He wrote, Spanking the Donkey; Dispatches from the Dumb Season. Anyways, getting to what you said he offered a critique on this current group of 'hippies.' Making the comparison to the late 60's/early 70's, his position was that the hippies of that era were out for radical change. That they were an actual driving anti-establishment force. A group that had discipline, and were united by the way they dressed, the music they listened to, and the message they spoke.

Compare that to the supposed 'hippies' of the day. No commonality of music, dress differently, do not seem united in message, and often, quite undisciplined. His point (and the point that I have taken) is that this current group could not be classified as such.

Also, if we were to actually compare anti-war protests today with the ones in the Nam era, I'm sure you'd find the number of "garden variety hippies" rather low. Modern hippies are, in reality, just a bunch of suburban dweebs that take their pot smoking a bit too seriously. Under normal circumstances they can't really bother themselves with such issues. Now labor groups, church groups, parent groups, vets, student groups, etc are the bulk of what's driving the current antiwar "movement", if it can even be called that yet.
