Setup man Joel Zumaya, whose fiery fastball became one of the most dominant pitches in baseball last season, left the bullpen and will go the 15-day disabled list with a possible dislocation to the middle finger of his right hand.

Manager Jim Leyland planned on using Zumaya Saturday night regardless of the situation. The second-year right-hander hadn't pitched since Monday, and Leyland hoped to give him Sunday off ahead of Monday's scheduled off-day.

I still can't understand this one. He dislocated his middle finger on his throwing hand while throwing in the bullpen??? Talk about freak injuries...but this one could be serious. He's going to have to be 100% confident in that finger to even consider pitching again, because it's kinda hard to throw a fastball/curveball/anything without your middle finger.

Yeah that is beyond strange.

Perhaps a cover for a damaged ego because he cant throw a strike?

I thought about that, but I couldn't come up with anything funnier than "I bet he hurt his finger playing guitar hero!" Anyway, Zumaya is an asshole, I don't feel bad for him one bit.

Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya is expected to be out for 12 weeks because of a ruptured tendon in his middle right finger.

Zumaya, who regularly throws fastballs at over 100 mph, hurt himself while warming up Saturday night at Kansas City. He was examined Monday in New York by Dr. Charles Melone, who was scheduled to perform surgery Thursday.
