For one they left Josh Fields out of the article all together which is unreal. Our pitching prospects are pretty exciting. I suppose the only validity the article has would be a lack of hitting spects. Nothing drafting a few college hitters couldn't fix.

The Daily Illini is probably one of the shittiest campus papers ever. Worse than Columbia College Chicago's.

If this article doesn't prove that, I don't know what does.
Guys like Travis Hafner, Grady Sizemore,
If he's trying to list players that have came through their team's minor league systems from the beginning, he's wrong about these two. Hafner began his career with Texas and Sizemore with Montreal.
And otherwise, it's a horrible article. He provides absolutely no basis for his claims about Sweeney/Gonzalez etc. And, as nole said, he didn't even mention Fields.
Bad journalism. :jagoff:
The daily Illini blows, along with everything else associated with the U of I, and Fighting CRYllini athletics
meanwhile, the Indiana Daily Student was ranked 9th best college paper in the nation by Princeton review

I have seen a picture of him illegally contacting DT Aaron Jones during his highschool playoff game.
Arrelius Benn and D'Angelo Mccray wanted to go to a school that has been completely awful with cold weather over perrennial powerhouses? Give me a break.

Wow, for someone who follows college athletics as much as you, you sure don't know that much about recruiting. Usually players commit to a COACH, not the school. Why do you think so many people change schools when a coach gets fired/gets a new job? Zook has recruited very well everywhere he has been.
As for the picture of him talking to a high school player, supposedly illegaly, I'd like to see it myself please.

They commit to a coach of course but the choice is between schools so WTF are you talking about? You cant separate school and coach in the recruiting process. Some recruits will go to a school just because, regardless of who is coaching there. I have written many papers on recruiting so anytime you want to talk about then lets do so.
COACH Zook is a great recruiter but why? His track record doesnt show hes a good coach. He didn't do well at UF so why would players want to play for him at Illinios? What is the selling point? Building up the program? He has already shown that he cant build, but instead tore down over in Gainesville. At least some great recruiters such as Mack Brown have championships to show for it.
Not to mention, he is shady to begin with. Throwing actual kegs at a party is one example. I hear from UF people down here all the time that say he was guilty of many violations.
I'll find that picture for you. If I can. It was from 3 years ago.

If you are familiar with Marvin Austin from last year, he was quoted as saying "I took football out of the equation, and made the best decision for me," Austin said immediately following his announcement."

Well, one thing he can offer at Illinois is playing time. Not to mention, its not just Zook recruiting, its his assistants as well. Mike Locksley has very strong Washington DC ties as he coached at maryland for years. He was responsible for bring in Arrelious Benn. Martez Wilson and the other Chicago recruits were mainly the work of assistant Reggie Mitchell who has very strong Chicago connections.
Also in attracting McCray and Benn, the Illinois staff first received commitments from high school teammates who were not nearly as highly regarded as a way to help show their interest.
To recruits who have committed to, visited and considered Illinois, much of the appeal comes down to the opportunity to play right away and to the possibility of turning around a losing program.
Take a look at this quote from Marvin Austin: "People are scared of what they don’t understand, And I don’t think they understand why kids are going to Illinois.” Austin has also said that the Illini had done a good job of recruiting in urban areas and that recruits were realizing they could go to less successful programs, where they could earn playing time early and more exposure.

Ok, well perhaps Benn wanted exposure.
But Mccray from Jacksonville? Makes no sense at all.
There isn't a better closer in the business than BB or any other coach that makes a recruit feel at home. So im not sure how Illinois out did us on that one.
Sounds to me like they could be scared to compete against the best.

The NCAA on Thursday banned the Hoosiers' new coach from calling recruits and making off-campus visits for a year, ruling Sampson and his staff at Oklahoma deliberately broke NCAA rules by making 577 extra phone calls to basketball prospects.
