Cause TDG and I need a thread to post in. :D
I just started reading Lisey's Story.
Hey PH13: IIRC you had said that you were reading it a little while back. Did you ever finish it?
FWIW, I still haven't gotten my hands on a copy of The Gunslinger Born. The one place near me that sells comic books has sold out twice already and doesn't know why his third shipment hasn't come in yet. :(

I've read:
Salem's Lot (meh)
The Shining (rock!)
The Green Mile (pretty good)
The Stand (pwns)
most of Desperation (meh)

I'm only about 10 pages into it so I don't have much of an opinion on it yet. I just finished Cell and Hearts In Atlantis (again).
The first is ok, not his best work. The latter is very good. The movie was horrible. If you do check it out at least read the first two "stories" in it. It's broken up into four seperate stories that are connected by various characters.
Also if you get some of his earlier work I would recommend Christine, Misery and IT. A few of my favorites. Some of his work under the name "Richard Bachman" is good too.

I'll also mention that I've read nearly all of his books. At least the ones I know about except for The Plant (which I think was only available online) and Cycle of the Werewolf (which I saw once at a book store and it cost $30).
I've also seen most of the movies based on his books and a lot of them were terrible. I've also seen the stuff not based on any book like Rose Red and Kingdom Hospital.

From what I know about it, it's an illustrated book (which explains the cost) that somewhat has to do with a calendar. I guess the original idea was to make it a calendar and King got his usual diarrhea of the mouth and made it into a book instead.
Eyes of the Dragon is another book with an interesting story behind it. Supposedly he wrote it for his kids when they were young because he didn't want them reading any of his other, scarier stuff.

I got Lisey's Story for christmas but haven't started reading it yet. I'm waiting to finish Choke (That's for you Zoso!).
You REALLY gotta fine The Gunslinger Born. It's so fucking cool, even if it is basically retelling a story we've already heard.
You mentioned Bachman, and I hear there is one final Bachman book that was "found in a trunk" after he "died" that should be coming out soon.
Oh, and J.J. Abrams (Of LOST fame) is optioning The Dark Tower movie. Confirmed.

The book is "Blaze". I've been hearing about it since late last year. I guess it's something that he originally wrote in 1973 and he's been re-writting/re-editing it. Release date is June 12.

The Dark Tower books are very good but a little different than the other stuff he writes. What I really find interesting is how he managed to wrap so many of his other books into the story.
IT, Insomnia, The Stand, Eyes of the Dragon, The Tailsman, Black House, Hearts in Atlantis... they all have some DT connection in them. I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting.

Really? Seriously? That book seemed so laborious and staunch to me, that I gave up and cut to the end of the book to read the ending.
King was the only reason I started reading novels, I loved the escapism his books provided the reader. As good as Kubrick's movie was, there is no comparison to the book.
My favorite King books are:
Carrie
Pet Semetary
Misery
Gerald's Game
The Body (short story)
Dark Half
Dead Zone
Firestarter
The Shining
Rita Haywarth and the Shawshank Redemption (short story)
Salem's Lot

AAHHH I KNOW!!! I was reading and saying to myself "Well, self, that certainly explains some of the more macbre turns a great many of his books took" .

A lot of the movies based on his books lately haven't really been horror movies. Hearts In Atlantis, The Green Mile, Secret Window, Dreamcatcher, Desperation... They had that Nightmares and Dreamscapes on USA not long ago but a lot of it was toned down for TV.
His gruesome stuff that was made into movies was made so long ago that the effects weren't all that great. Cujo, Christine, Misery...

During the palaver at the end of the first book, Roland calls him Walter.
I think King actually screwed this up in the original Gunslinger. He made it sound as though Walter and Marten were 2 different people. In the revised version he combines the 2.

Kinda like how the Man In Black tells Roland that he has to face "The Beast" or something...in the revised version I believe that was changed to Crimson King.

Actually, I think the lines were removed completely. I once read something that detailed all the differences between the two books but I don't remember where.
Also another point of confusion is the description of the Crimson King in Insomina compared to book 7. Also the mention of "the Big Combination" in Black House. That never came up either.

Well, I think the comic is canon, right? And I sure as hell don't remember the CK ever being described as "a giant fuckin' spider monster" much in the books. I seem to remember King describing him as just a crazy looking old man when Roland sees him during the oh-so-climactic battle ( ) at the Tower.
I need to go back and re-read some of the other books that directly deal with him again.
He's another one of those characters introduced that didn't get nearly enough "screen time" in the series, IMO.

Have you ever read the Dark Tower Concordance by Robin Furth? I hear that explains a lot of stuff.
I also read on a DT website that his spider form is mentioned in DT7 although I don't remember it either. Check this out:
According to the Dark Tower Concordance by Robin Furth, desecendants of Arthur Eld are born with a sigul that allows access to the Tower. The CK and Mordred are born with a red hour-glass mark, while Roland inherited his Guns which were forged from Eld's sword. According to Furth, in his madness, the CK cut-off or destroyed his sigul and in his immortal form, attempted to take the Tower, but instead became imprisoned at the top. This coincides with the many references throughout the book that CK is the Beast of the tower. In order to release himself and bring down the Tower, the CKs mortal were-spider form hatched the plan where Mordred would be conceived and he could take Mordreds sigul on his foot to open the Tower. Walter is sent to do this, but unfortunately, they underestimated Mordred, and Walter is killed. Learning of this and Rolands victory at the Devar-toi, the King sees his plans foiled and in a last ditch effort makes himself undead and therefore unkillable by Roland (and no longer a were-spider) and probably knowing he will be trapped on a tower ledge, brings sneetches with him in desperation to foil Roland. This all concurs with the dual form mentioned in Black House, and also the god form in Insomnia, which because it is trapped at the top of the Tower, has limited power. (btw, DT7 does not negate Insomnia IMHO. It is stated that the Calvins do not know what is truth or fiction in Kings writing, leaving it open to interpretation).
Got that from a poster at thedarktower.net

Eli Roth (Hostel) is set to direct a movie adaption of Cell after he wraps up Hostel 2. He said he wants to deviate from the book a little bit because he thinks that it loses some tension after you find out that the phone-crazies aren't really trying to kill them.

So this issue only gets up to the confrontation with the BCH huh? I was hoping they'd get farther. It should be interesting to see the meeting with Marten and Farson. There was always a big debate of whether they were the same person or not.

I always liked to think that they were. I think in the book it hints that they aren't, but they never say it.
My favorite King character of all time (More than Roland) is Flagg, and I liked the idea that he, as Marten/Farson/etc. was basically orchestrating Roland's entire life, by forcing him to get his guns early (hoping he would die in the process) then as Farson by causing the fall of Gilead and forcing Roland on his quest.

Hey TeeDeeGee (or anyone else reading this thread for that matter I guess)
Are you strictly a Dark Tower fan or do you read all of Kings work? Do you read/collect the books?
I ask because my mom is a garage sale fanatic and is constantly buying me SK books for 50 cents or a dollar and then asking me "Do you already have this one?"
Sometimes she'll find a few that I don't have but I've got a handful that are doubles. Just curious if there are any that your looking for. I've got a few hardcover and some paperback.

I can't think of any I'd really want...I was looking for Eyes of the Dragon a while ago, and it would be sweet if I could find an old copy of The Gunslinger (pre King's edits)

That's cool. Just figured I'd ask. I'd rather sell them to somebody who would actually read them rather than somebody that would turn around and try to sell them on Ebay for $5.00 a piece. That actually happened to me a couple of years ago. I sold a few in a garage sale for like 50 cents and the dude flat out said that he was only interested in reselling them. I found his listing on Ebay and he didn't get any bids. Serves him right.
FWIW here's what I have:
Christine
Insomnia
IT
Skeleton Crew
Bachman Books <--- includes "Rage"
Talisman
Nightshift
Dead Zone
Pet Semetary
Black House

Misery is on AMC right now. They just showed the "hobbling" scene. Ouch. Annie Wilkes is one crazy psycho.
The book's version of that scene seemed much more painful.

Serious question for a second:
If Stephen King's car crashed outside your isolated cabin, would you break his legs and force him to write Dark Tower 8, just for you?
OR, if Peter Straub was in the same car, would you break BOTH of their legs and have them write the third Talisman book?
:omg:

I think they've been talking about it for a while. I REALLY hope they do it since for whatever reason the Talisman/Black House didn't really crossover to The Tower books at all (except The Crimson King stuff and the breakers in Black House. I think the breakers were in black house...right?)

There was always a big debate whether the Territories were part of Roland's world or not. I really don't think they were. Just another level on the tower.
They mentioned the kidnapped kids being used as part of the "big combination", but he never explains really what/where it is and what it's used for. I totally forgot the name of the kid Jack was trying to save in BH but he probably could've been a breaker had they took him to Blue Heaven.

From what I recall, the territories do seem a whole lot like Gilead and all the baronies (What is that called...In-World?), but it probably is just another level of the Tower, or else there probably would've been stuff like Farson referenced in the other books.
And if I'm remembering the plot of Black House and DT 7 correctly, weren't the kids being kidnapped being used as "food" for the Breakers?

Yea, I think it did mention that. Which totally doesn't mesh with DT7. I need to go back and read that book again. I've forgotten most of it.
One more question. Did you think the Talisman (at the end of the first book) was one of the bends o the rainbow?

Alright, I FINALLY picked up Gunslinger Born 3.
Other than the one scene with Farson (which was SUPER badass), the whole thing was kinda meh.
It was good, but nothing really interesting happened.
Also, when I was at the comic store, I had to stop myself from spending $20 to get a variant cover version of the first issue...it just looked so very cool.

That's been my problem with them so far. A little bit of new information has been given but soo much of it is stuff we already know.
Did this issue seem a little bit shorter to you? I wonder if they cut back a little to have all that stuff from the ComicCon.

Monthly comic book bump, if ya ken it.
I picked up issue 4 of Gunslinger Born today. Pretty cool, I don't remember Roy Depape being so badass in the book...but he's had some good stuff so far.
Also, have we seen The Man In Black (Walter O'Dim, right?) yet in the comics? If not, his appearance in this issue was pretty neat.
And that thing in the back, Maerlyn's Mirror and whatnot...is that ever referenced in the books? I don't remember it.

I read it last night. I see what you mean now. He never really came out and said that Marten/Walter could actually change his appearance in the books.
Again, I thought this one seems kind of short. I also thought they picked a terrible spot to cut it off. I like the extra information we are getting about Merlyn, Gan, the Prim, the great old ones, ect... but I just hope they aren't cutting the issue short to add all that stuff in.
The stuff from the ComicCon is getting boring.

1408 (the numbers add up to 13. Scary!)
It's a really good short story. One of his better ones. It's about a dude that's going to visit all these so-called "haunted" places and is writing a book about it. The hotel manager warns him to not go into the room but he does anyway. Lots of strange shit happens in the room.

I got issue 5 of Gunslinger born t'other day.
It's more of the same, just stuff we've already seen but with pictures. There was a couple pages of stuff with Marten/Walter (I don't remember who is who) and that was probably the best part.
2 more issues, I'm hoping we rap up Mejis in the next one and see nothing but Jericho Hill in the final issue.

I've read and seen Misery, and I've seen the Shining.
I don't read much, ok I don't read at all, but we had a horror unit in 12th grade english. I picked Misery over the Shining, because at the time I had never even heard of Misery. I kinda knew about the Shining, so I picked up something new.
When I got to the climax of Misery, I never felt anything like that before. (Insert :fap: joke here) I was totally enthralled in it that everything around me kinda fuzzed out and turned black and all I could see were the words. It was incredible.

You should really read more of his books then. They are always better than the movies. Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me are the only 2 that really did the stories justice IMHO.

Those two books have always been right in the middle for me. Not my favorites, but certainly not horrible either.
I read the Talisman a while back and don't remember a whole lot of it. The Territories, Twinners, Speedy, Traveling Jack, Wolf, somebody named Sunshine something? I remember that book sort of dragging on a little in parts. I don't remember the part where he finally reaches the talisman at all.
Black House was a bit better IMO. I also enjoyed the many connections to the Dark Tower books.

A lot of people I've talked to have said that same thing. We've always wondered if the Territories was the same thing as Roland's world. If not, I bet they are very close.

I just finished "Richard Bachman's" new book Blaze. It was pretty good but awful short. Only 300 and some odd pages. I read it in 2 nights. I guess King wrote it around the same time all the other Bachman books were written but he really didn't like it so he stuck it in a box and forgot about it for 20 years or so. There's a foreword in the book that explains it all.
The book itself is about this big dude. 6'7" and about 270 lbs. The only problem is that he's not very bright. He gets hooked up with this other dude and they start doing simple cons to make money. They come up with a plan to kidnap a baby to hold for ransom but it turns out that the big dude ends up having to go through with the plan by himself.
I'll try not to ruin it but it has a pretty predictable "Bachman" ending to it.
I'm also reading Lisey's Story but I'm having a hell of a time trying to get into it. I'm about 100 pages in but it's really slow. The story just hasn't caught my interest at all.

More of the same. Cool art, rad story, but very little, if anything, new.
Granted, I haven't read the back page stuff, but I guess there's a neat little description of all the different guns a gunslinger in training uses at different stages.
The way this issue wraps up, I'm starting to fear we won't get to see Jericho Hill. :(
I'm hoping #7 gives us a hint of what comes later in the books...like a picture of the Ka Tet or *crosses fingers* the Tower, OR *crosses fingers AND toes* Randall Flagg in all his darkle and tincting glory.
