View Full Version : I still haven't figured out why I can let the White Sox affect me so much..?

It's weird. I'm a Bears fan, a Bulls fan, a Mets fan (my NL team) and (of course) a White Sox fan.
I'm disappointed when the Bears lose, the Bulls, etc and happy when they win.
But when it's the White Sox..it's the same emotions times 50. When they win..I am in a great mood the rest of the day. I can get a speeding ticket, have a crappy day at work, fall and twist an akle..but if the Sox win..it's a great day.
Then the opposite effect. I scratch off a lotto ticket and win 500 bucks in the morning, get a promotion, have an otherwise perfect day (like today) and the Sox lose..and I am still depressed.
Why do I care about this team so much (the Sox)?...what is it about the White Sox? When I'm at work or listening on the radio..and the Sox lose (such as today in the 9th..I'm waiting for Gameday to update with Crede up to bat)..when it says out recorded and I know the game is over..I actually have a sick feeling in my stomach for a minute or two. I can't talk to anyone.
Is it that baseball's just different and involves more emotional involvement? Why do I let this team break my heart sometimes? IT IS JUST A GAME...
Does anyone know what I am referring to? or am I just pathetic?
I am sure that others on this board know exactly what I am talking about...

I had this conversation on Opening Day. A buddy of mine was saying how this season, he's just going to try and enjoy it, go with the flow, and not get too upset about the shenanigans of the black & white. I thought I might be able to pull off the same thing, especially since we're NOT coming off a WS win.
not gonna happen.

I have my real family all year long (a bunch of crazy Italians and Lithuanians) and then my second family from April to October (though they wouldn't give a shit about me if they ever met me)...
I am going to try to just enjoy the season...baseball can break your heart though..
When you think about it..the odds are pretty horrible (1 in 30...a 3.33333% chance of winning it all)..that means no matter what kind of season you have whether you make the playoffs, etc....96.666% of the time that season will end in some kind of heartbreak..

I know exactly how you feel. I was pissed when the Sox lost today, and on Monday, and it does affect the rest of my day. No matter how much I try to convince myself that it's just a game, I still let it bother me so much when they lose.
On the other hand, the fact that losing sucks so bad can only make it that much better when they win, and that's always good.

I think the sideways comments from people that know I'm probably pissed are the worst. Even if they're joking or just messin with me, I want to flush their souls down my turlet.

If the Sox have a really tough loss, I don't even want to bring it up. I won't watch ESPN or any other highlights of it. If someone else even brings it up I want to tell them to shut the fuck up.

I don't get too emotional about any sports team. They win and it's excellent. They lose and whatever, I go on about my day.
I care more if I lose money on a game.
Have you ever lost or won a lot on a game?

I would have been OK today if it weren't for the Jndjans fan rubbing it in my face the first few innings while I was trying to enjoy my lunch. There's something about the taunts and "YES"s of an opposing team's fans that really grinds my gears and makes me want the Sox to win that much more.
Otherwise, if I'm by myself or among Sox fans, I might get pissed off during the game (like I did when Garland let the Tribe get right back into the game after Thome put them up 3-0) but it quickly subsides once the game is over. The Sox winning it all in 2005 has really helped in that respect.
Plus, this year, I don't have any expectations about this team going to the playoffs. Anything they do as far as making the postseason is pure gravy to me.

You know..it's only two games..but I don't get the feeling they are that good...
At the beginning of 2005 (even opening day) I just had a good feeling about the team..you get a vibe..I had the same feeling early in 2000..
It's not so much about the wins or losses...it's just observing how they play..you can sense if the motivation or concentration or team camraderie exists almost right away (even after only a handful of games)..
I just don't get a good feeling from this team this year. I know it's early..but still...

The talent is there, and we all know that. The White Sox will fucking hit the snot out of the ball, and they definitely can pitch.
But actions > potential. I want to see the results on the field, and the hunch I've had all preseason was that 2007 was not going to go the Sox's way. I hope I'm wrong.

I also felt great about our chances going into 2005. And then at the beginning of 2006, I felt like there was no way in hell they wouldn't win the division. I was convinced they were gonna repeat. 2006 ended in very shitty fashion. Now, I don't feel all that confident about the Sox.
I think the way we feel going into a season is pretty much determined by how the last one ended.

I used to be like that but since they won the World Series it doesn't really bother me.
Yeah..the White Sox could have several losing seasons and the fans still love them because of 2005..
I think our fan base tripled after 2005 (and I'm not just talking about bandwagoners)..
05 to the White Sox was like 84 to the Cubs...it cemented the team and the franchise into the hearts of a lot of people for years to come..
The worst part for me is explaining why the Sox lost to people who want to know, which is pretty much everybody around me. Their either innocent Sox fans who don't know why we lost or jackass Cub fans who want to make me feel worse about my team losing.
My favorite personal episode of this was in 2005 after the Sox lost game 1 of the ALCS. I refused to look at a newspaper that morning and my mom (a Sox fan) came downstairs while I was eating breakfast and was like "What's up with the White Sox?" and I remembered they lost last night and got kinda pissed. Actually, really pissed. Luckily, I bit my tongue.

One thing that's bad is that everyone I work with..all my friends and family know I'm a diehard Sox fan..so if they are on a losing streak and I just want to try to forget about them..I can't because everyone wants to ask me about them.
My brother and now Anthony are taunting me when they lose (they're both Cubs fans)...like the mature adult I am..I usually react by slamming a door.

Some girl came up to me at school the day after that game and said something like, "How bout them Sox." I got really pissed but I held my tongue and just said, "How bout them Cubs" instead of the first response that came to mind, which was more like, "Fuck you, you stupid bitch."
It really pisses me off when Cub fans try to rub shit in, especially when, after they choked in 2003, I avoided bringing it up around any of my friends that are Cub fans. After the Sox won the World Series, though, I rubbed it in their fucking faces as much as I could.

Pretty much the same thing here. The losses last year, as well as the first couple this year, haven't had the same "pain" as pre-October 2005. The World Series truly did something to cure the hurt, and it's gonna take a great deal of time for that feeling to leave.
In no way am I saying it's okay for them to lose now; however, the fact that the albatross of losing has been lifted from our shoulders is huge.
